I can only speak about the forum but it is not dying. Its rather stagnating for the last 12 months.
For the exact numbers you can check
This topic.

" hey i just came across this game and saw it had a forum i'd like some advice.... oh wait it's dead ....."
the sound i hear every time one of these threads is made lol
over 400 people visit the forums a week, say only 40% of people bother with the main forum you got 1000 people playing
for a text based game thats no affiliated to anything else thats damn good, seeing as other tbgs have a base of just 300 people or less
imo gatewars has done very well it's had heights of 10-20k players and being over 5 years and still going
eventually every game goes into decline just pull out all you CoDs and MoHs and you see the vast majority will have pushed on to the new shiny thing, however a few hardcore fans stick to it and yes when admin decides/forgets about gatewars there will still be people playing in several years time.

Well in the case of a game such as this 200 people playing it constitutes dying..there are not 1000 people playing this game.

There are way more than 200 people playing.
The game count shows 200 people minimum at ALL times, 24 hours. Now unless those 200 people are playing the game 24/7 this game has about 500-600 people atleast playing it actively. In summer I might add.
I think this game is dying just as it was dying 2 years ago and just as it was dying 3 years ago, ofcourse the numbers are going to decrease. To say that it's started dying now is wrong, it's a continuous process that's been happening for a few years now. People move on to other and possibly better things, it's the nature of all games. This is no different.

I'm more interested in how admin calculates that number, every turn change? every time someones session expires?
I would have to say though most people log on a few times a day for a few hours, so its probably around double that mark so probs 400 odd. Then again we don't even know that number is a true representation do we?

I always figured it was every turn change to make it more accurate because of people logging in at multiple times to just bank etc. etc.
But yea admin hasn't exactly given a proper calc for that, it's still a safe assumption that 200 isn't the number of people that play the game still, I'm sure it's more than that.

I've always thought that figure updates turn change, but maybe not. Anyway too many people seem to base this "game is dying" on that figure alone. How can we base it on that figure alone when we don't even know how Jason has calculated it and when exactly it updates.
If that figure was taken off then there would be no indication of how many online, i wonder how many would claim the game is dying then.

Of course there is. And as you can see in the stats I only count with those who actually post.

You could guess the number of active players if you look for players with a defence ingame. Its easy as this.

Too many snipers to make that calculation correct though.

A sniper should have a defence of around 100k supers...
A sniper with genuinely 0 def is a 'tard, cos he can be farmed and ACed for free
...game is not dead, in fact, arguably - it's more exciting than it has been for a long time. The large Empires are disbanding...there is more ability for smaller and more independant alliance.
Someone mentioned me as a benchmark for believing the game is dying....no, I just don't have the time I once did. That's the only problem, the hardcore and committed are growing up...the people who played, went through Uni, started jobs - they're having children and getting married now.
You need fresh faces...promote the game and advertise...invite your friends.
That's what we used to do...
Friend: What you doing on the computer.
Me: Farming on this online game...it's pretty jokes...
Friend: Link?

It's still plenty alive enough
But I think making so many ascensions thus making a MASSIVE gap between new and old players, regardless of unit caps which mean nothing now, has been a big step into stopping people from starting it up.
But some still do ^.^
I'd say 2-3k active accounts.
