this is the magic of the .png file. you can create .png in gimp (and in photoshop too i bet). this file makes alpha channel transparent, so you need to indicate what color component you want transparent and then adjust other colors (cos with one component transparent they change). it's similar in technique to creating .gifs.

blue flames or blue plasma is cool
i like the Stargate itself, and the show Atlantis.

@ techno: how bout burning atlantis gate (just imagine it animated):
