Re: WTH (Ombudsman) nomination discussion

@ Brdavs,,,,
Your wrong.

But one thing I would like to see much more then the current state, is for someone willing to grow the position. What so many of you fail to understand is the OMGWTHMAN is not a "supervisor" to the mod team. It holds no power over them, and it answers directly to the Admins. The job is not about trying to "control" mods, that's just what several narrow minded people want it to be.

It is the voice of the people in ALL forum matters. If you want a word added or removed from the filter list then you go to the oms, If your sick of seeing full page siggies, or people wearing 7 or 8, or if you think there should be more, then go to the oms. If you feel certain sections of forums are no longer needed, or a new section is, then go to the oms. The job could be so much more the a "mod complaints" person, and it should be. It should be a voice for those who refuse to post here for fear of massing and extortion, the voice of those who no longer come here because of the conditions. What is so hard as admins, is the fact that ANY move we make is bashed for no reason, but if improvements come to us as admins, demanded by the people, promoted by the OMGWTHMAN, and approved by Admins then there is NO ONE who can complain and stand on their soap boxes screaming bias.

THAT is what I want to see in a new candidate, someone who wants the job to better the community, to better the forums, for the people, not for personal gain, not for political or alliance gain, but for no other reason then to better these forums for the sake of the people in them, and believe you me, you can lose as many friends as you gain when you just do whats right.

~Lore~

*Edit*
I would also like to hear peoples ideas on weather or not the Oms needs an assistant or remain a stand alone position. that can be decided later, just giving you food for thought.

Re: WTH (Ombudsman) nomination discussion

Well I can quite honestly say Lore, I was never under any impressions that it was the Ombudsman's role to do these things, as my application post demonstrates...

He is just a catalyst and transcriber for community -> administration communication, not V for Vendetta...

although it is not helped by the fact both side of the forum users have, in the past been using the Ombudsman as judge and jury. The amount of times I have seen a mod post, "Lets wait to see what The Ombudsman has to say" as if it were his decision, when it is quite clearly not..

The way I understand this... its meant to be..

User complains to Ombudsman -> Ombudsman puts argument and issue forward to administration -> administration responds, Ombudsman keeps peace, but can (and should) remain neutral to both parties -> Administration makes judgement, can or cannot use Ombudsman's recommendation.

Like a glorified post owl with a mouth. The Ombudsman is meant to be a middle party used to help communication. He is neither the unified voice of the people, Judge and Jury OR the administrations lap dog.

Yes but that also came by the ombudsmans self in my oppinion. They said only to visit em for complaints and thats how they only kept getting complaints.

Now thats why I and I assume the others signed up. To long have we bantered and ranted towards eachother with no progress at all. 2 years ago the forums were a fun place with fun people and good sportmanship. This changed over the year as the community (and by community I mean everyone here) has changed. I truely believe that with the help of everyone and changes on each party involved here we can bring joy and fun back in this forum. Even maybe even revive the race related stuff and prune the forum of dead areas. But thats not only the job of the ombudsman thats the job and duty of every community member around in my eyes.

I see no loss in having an assistant. But that will surely need some thoughbts and input and most of all teamwork between the ombudsman and his/her assistent.

Re: WTH (Ombudsman) nomination discussion

well lore i think you might be on to something. 2 ombudsmans would relieve the stress of 1 ombudsman (if the 2 get along) and it would help in case something happends in RL to the ombudsman (PC's crashing and stuff like that)

then again if the ombudsmen can't work togheter it's a disaster. i think ou could always make the winner of the competition the ombudsman and see if he/she wants a right hand or not

I do not believe Semper can do this with some people.

This lack of impartiality is a major flaw I feel in his application for the position.

all part of the role playing... You see I commit to my role play roles because I am a good role player. *points at self* Certainly seems to have fooled you! :-D On the same note, I would commit to this role in the same way. I was brought up to not be bothered, but when I have a job to do, I do it to my full abilities without messing about.

and I never, ever take offence at anything. I could now write a long winded post about what I exactly feel about your personal character and flaws Tekki, and how its rather apparent you really dont like me so this point is 'bias', but I wont... :-) Just to demonstrate my point.

Hope that clears a few things up for you Tekki...

Semper, I have spoken to you several times out of character and the response has been the same, as it is now. You challenge the opinion and display reasons. In this case, it's you are a 'role player', which may be true but does not get around the point that you react in this way, both in character and out.

Your response is great for a role player or for a debater, both of whom are meant to justify their position to make it believable, and you are both. Though such response is not, IMO, good for an ombudsman.

There is one part of your post which especially displays why I believe you are unfit for the position 'I could now write a long winded post about what I exactly feel about your personal character and flaws Tekki'. Despite the fact you have not done this, you obviously have thought about it and written it mentally so to speak. An Ombudsman does not judge the people, he judges the facts and in this, 'what you feel about my personal character' is a value judgement about me, not about the facts of the matter and indicates strongly that you would not be impartial if I was involved in a case for example.

You and I do not know each other that well. We have not spoken in depth about anything and certainly not intimately or how I would with a friend. Our encounters have been limited to a few forum posts and ingame PMs. which have been some what hostile. As such I do not feel you can know my true character, but, your responses in these medium is an indication of how you would react as a Ombudsman.

While I applaud your debating and role play ability, the reactions are not appropriate for an Ombudsman especially as at least some of these communications are to attempt to deal or discover why some things happened ingame. In those communications you displayed no tact, guile, reasoning, or mediation ability to discover what you wished. Instead you lashed out when the initial response was not pleasing. This may be in-character for Semper and a good role playing tact, it displays lack of suitability for an ombudsman who will have to deal with hostile and deliberately unhelpful PMs in order to discover the truth. (My PMs were not designed to be deliberately unhelpful.)

You may not like this opinion Semper, as an ombudsman you'd be expected to accept that opinion, something which you have already challenged.

My dear Tekki, you have never spoken to me out of character. :-D The only place I am out of character is on msn, and as far as I know I just added you about four hours ago. So that point, that opinion... is not necessarily void, as it is misinformed. As you later go on to write in this post.. you and I do not know each very well..

Your response is great for a role player or for a debater, both of whom are meant to justify their position to make it believable, and you are both. Though such response is not, IMO, good for an ombudsman.
Thanks.. *ego grows*

There is one part of your post which especially displays why I believe you are unfit for the position 'I could now write a long winded post about what I exactly feel about your personal character and flaws Tekki'. That statement about the possibility of my reply was a trap to help me demonstrate something else, something which you fell into, thanks. About me being impartial.. why Tekki I have been slandered many a time on this forum for being completely logical to a point it shocks people I could be so remorseless and do the unpopular, but correct thing. Yes, this too is NOT the quality of an Ombudsman, but I did not use "am always slandered for being" to further demonstrate the point, I can emphasise to a balanced point.

Thats where I was leading... I do not know your character, but I wanted you to admit that for the benefit of our audience for the, well for want of a better word..clarity of your opinion on the matter. Yes you may not believe that my role play is suitable for Ombudsman, and it is not... I know better than to go start acting like Doctor Cox, or A system Lord or even Emperor Palpatine when something 'important' is involved...im much smarter than that.. and well I am actually a nice guy. Hows that for some guile, tact and cunning to get the results wanted? :-D

As your own words show, this is a role play tact, nothing more. The question that needs to be asked now, for your introspection upon the matter, IF you do.. is whether there is a man beneath the mask? On top of that, you caught me on a very very bad day in regards to that issue with law (for personal reasons I shall not divulge)...a time I would intentionally not appear at work for should I have the job as not to cause trouble, though I doubt I would be gone for even an entire day (I dont sleep much...) furthermore, before you factor that into your decision no person is on this forum for alot of their time, and it would be unfair to expect anyone to be. :-)

You may not like this opinion Semper, as an ombudsman you'd be expected to accept that opinion, something which you have already challenged.

It is an opinion.. and you're right as an Ombudsman I am expected to accept opinions on matters of the forum, but personal opinion, especially ones that harm ones credibility in a time of 'election' any man or woman should be allowed to defend, that is only fair. I am sure anyone reading this would agree with that.

I say to you Tekki, you're basing a lot off a few encounters, ones that were never in positive circumstances from the off set, ones where by my own personal codes of conduct I would perform in role play to the end. So I would encourage you to stop, think again... and before you seal the fate of your image of me in your own mind to delve a little deeper.

Many of the forum users do not know me.. they know a few facts about me, that I can debate, I can perform and I know some of the right people here and there..but very few truly know how I would perform in any form of REAL responsible position because no, you guys dont really know me its not unintentional..and I also do not take the game, or my other roles with any responsibility...my general forum conduct is how it is because I have nothing to lose, the same as for my ingame behaviour, but a wise person, as I am sure you are.. would bare all that in mind before so readily linking game and responsibility, façade and identity. Its not so absurd to have a separate identity on an online game now is it?

I am applying for this role for several reasons...
firstly I believe I could perform it very well for the benefit of the community and administration, its not directly the role of the Ombudsman to improve the forum as a whole, but with the continued opportunity to work with the mods and the admins I believe good things could grow. A few friends asked me to apply for it when I was not going to, because they thought I would be good too...

Secondly I need something to keep my hands busy, in game has gone stale, Origins will be months off anything good, University life is full of exams and coursework until May so my rl is going to be very busy, but at the same time I will need somewhere to unwind and flex my fingers away from the constrained halls of microsoft word and sourced sentences...so what better way then some detective work and meeting more people?

semper, i think what tekki is trying to say is that you should be able to keep your cool in any situation as ombudsman, even when you do not like the situation. tekki was pointing out that you haven't always managed that. but see it as an opertunity to prove that you are capable of foing those things
