Maybe run your central images through a few photo cleaning filters. Also make sure you lock the proportions when resizing. That way the images themselves don't get accidently stretched or something. Also try defringing or redefining the borders, that always helps when you etch a render.
It occured to me that it might just be the fact that you aren't using high enough res images, like you said? Or that you are stretching them too far? I'm not sure, but that one in your quoted post looks a bit blurry.

Haha, I'm probably going to go for Nigatsu's. I do like #1 on that one though. Problem is that it's not a signature and I'd probably still end up picking Nigatsu's as it follows suit to my persona.
