BELISKNER wrote:Much like what Wolf said. People who say 'you must earn respect' are the ones who lose my respect.
When I talk to someone I treat them as I would any person meeting for the first time, polite and courteous.
Respect and Courtesy are different.
Over my nearly 2 years playing this game, many people have added me on MSN and said such things like;
Sir, Oh great one, The almighty Beliskner etc and personally I don't like that, I always tell people to call me Dan. Some people believe that because their account is better than another persons' that they are instantly better than them.
Back on my point, the amount of people I truly respect in SGW you can count on your hands. My point being, when I speak to someone new I have a 'common respect' for them and am polite but I do not respect them in a profound sense, you don't have to earn my respect, all people are given the same 'common respect' when I first talk to them and like I said, if they aren't being very nice they lose part of that common respect. If they are nice and polite then over time the common respect may turn into a deeper respect.
To sum it up, people who demand respect are the ones who have my least respect!
One of the main people I respect above all is Inferno. Why? Because we have been friends now since about April 05 and not only is he a great friend but someone I can completely 110% trust with anything and he is the type of friend that won't run for cover if things get messy. Basically, true friend and top bloke!
There is a few other I truly respect but for the most part, people I know just have my respect in a friendship sense (See my bullet points below).
3 Layers :P
- Profound Respect - Very few people have this, you can count them on your fingers.
- Respect - A few people have this, friendships and such things.
- Common Respect - What everyone starts with when I first speak to them.
Respect is not always earned but rather grows over time.
Hit the nail on the head, the exact way I was trying to, except:
- Common Respect - What everyone starts with when I first speak to them.
I consider that just being courteous, I guess I think of respect differently. Respecting someone to me, is what you call your 2nd layer. What you call Common respect to me is just courteousness. I give courteousness, but you have to earn my respect by building it over time.

A quote is coming into my head but it's part of a very funny quote and only the first part is the one i mean seriously (the second part is to make some people laugh if they want)
Let's agree to respect each others views
...
No matter how wrong yours may be.
Everybody will have different values on which to judge the extent of respect they will give to another person.
And everyone will have different "basic amout" of respect, or tolerance or whatever you would want to call it, they will show towards a person they just got to know.
I think if people would at least try a little bit to respect people they never talked to before then probably about 80% of the abusive or insulting pm
s that are sent around (ingame or forum) could be avoided

I find it difficult to measure respect. There are aspects of people that I can respect, and others that I cannot respect. I cannot, however, say that "I have 56 units of respect for this person, but only 54.6 units of respect for this other one. It's a close draw, but..." I just don't see respect as an amount. I see it as a connection that you can have to others that has a certain strength to it.
Can I relate to this person? Can I understand them, or where they are coming from? Do we share common goals? Do we share common views? These all serve to strengthen such a connection. Let's be honest here, we don't connect to everyone the same way. Some of us have gold or copper (for those of you who don't know: those are very good electrical conductors

) connections to each other. Some of us have a harder time, and it can easily get heated... like a resistor.
Regardless of this, we are all connected to each other, and by showing disrespect, we are, in essense, denying the existence of this connection. This is harmful to the self, as is denying any other Reality. Facing Reality is the best thing you can do.

Of course there is a basic respect everyone has.... but it can be lost with wrong actions... who have no respect is a lost man...
But certain levels of respect can be reached...
My levels are:
-ppls did much to the game: i respect them even if their actions hurt me or something, who care, they did great work for the game and the community
-ppls who did much for me:) I appreciate it, and try to pay back the help as soon as i can
-living legends: yes there are some of these ppls in the game... No further things, this is a special group...
Respect have to be erarned tho...
But its not that hard... i can see honourable things even in newbs... its simpe..... give yourself and be a good ppl.

Respect is automatically given by me to those wishing to speak about anything, shareing your thoughts etc, So its everyone here, It then, as Dan said, grows, The only way you loose respect in my eyes is by showing a lack of curtesy in the respect department. You voice your opinion for example, about me, it wouldnt bother me, unless it was just downright rude...

Respect, IMO, well there ain't none. You either like someone or you don't on this game. If you like them you listen to what they have to say and help out, if you don't like them you argue with them on everything and generally be a pain in the butt.
Thats my 2cents,

Respect is a confusing term. Brought back to its basis, it describes how you look at other people. If you haven't seen, met or heard of a person, it's hard to speak of respect. You have to get to know someone to actually develop respect. That said, you still need to decide how you're going to treat someone without knowledge of that person. this decision has a lot to do with your selfrespect, your optimism/pessimism and some communication strategy.
-The fuller you are of yourself, the bigger the chance that you have relatively less respect for others.
-Optimistic people are more likely to give people the benefit of the doubt, pessimists will expect disappointment and try to prevent it.
-If you show respect for a person, chances are better that they will return respect.
-Some people operate sorta like a spamfilter. Treat everyone like crap, unless someone shows certain characterisitics, those get picked out for a different treatment.
Personally, I try to treat everyone I first meet with courtesy and kindness. Words and actions down the line will determine wether they will earn or lose respect.

I think that Sleipnir pretty much nailed it there. I agree totally.
