@ Jenny - As far as I am aware your country have not invaded anyone recently and so your military are not realy part of my tirade.

Well, our military sent men to Afganistan and Iraq as well... if I get it right, they are 'invading' another country as well.

I'm not stating which side of the fence I am on, but I am hoping everyone, including the veterans can see the difference between critisizing the political act of going to war and critisizing those who are following the orders.

The former is acceptable for public consideration, the latter is not, at least on these forums.

Well, I don't post on here very often as I find most of the puerile nonsense that goes on here quite distasteful. However, for some reason or other I feel compelled to post.

Reaperman, imagine that this thread was being held as a conversation. Perhaps in a cafe in Baghdad ten years ago. Your anti government views would have earned you an early morning call by the 'special police' and you would have been tortured and perhaps killed for those views. The war in Iraq has many faults and there are many troubles in that country now but the people of Iraq are now free to express themselves politically. Why? Because some of those poor dumb bastards you dislike so much were willing to lay everything on the line.

You state that your post was not aimed at people defending their countries. It was aimed at the 'invaders'.
Most of the soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan are volunteers. They sign on the dotted line to protect their respective countries, unfortunately once that signature is completed the soldier looses the right to choose which wars he or she serves in. All would be willing to stand and defend the borders of our countries and our loved ones but that is not a choice given to the common soldier.

Do yourself a favour and do a bit of independent research. See how many times US or UK(used as examples as we do tend to be at the forefront of these invasions) soil has been threatened in the last 20 years or so.

Reaperman, do we, as rich, democratic countries not have a responsibility to help other countries? When we see injustice and dictatorship are we to stand by and allow it?

As a former British soldier who served in Northern Ireland and Bosnia it fills my heart with joy when I encounter rabid pacifism such as yours. Because, in a very small way it was me and others like me that gave you the right to express that opinion.

Thanks Smoosh. I was thinking that.

I have never served. And I never will. I grew up watching my father serve.

.....*sighs*..... Reaperman. I'll say this. My father didn't get to pick where he went. My father never got to choose which conflicts he got to be a part of. When he went to Bosnia.... it was hard, cause he wasn't sure he wanted to be there. But he went. For a couple of reasons.

He could help. And he knew it. He had 12 years left in his contract at that point in time. Cause you can't just leave whenever you want. You can't give two weeks notice. And cause he's so used to saying 'yes sir' that it never really crossed his mind he could say no. Cause to a military man it's not an option.

I grew up hearing the same motto again and again. whenever I asked dad why he had to do something:

"Ours is not to question why, ours is but to do or die"

You wanna hate the government and the wars, go ahead. Some presidents (or in my case Prime Ministers) should be shot. It's the way of the world sometimes.

But please don't come into threads and try to disrespect the men and ladies who actually put their lives at risk for what the government has declared. Just because they blindly serve doesn't then mean that they are blind to what's going on.

Thank you.

I'm going into the Air Force, does that make me your hero to be? :-D

*wants to fly F-16*

>.<

No, you have to actually become a pilot first :smt016

It's a long difficult road ahead of, though I'm sure you already know that. However I applaud you for being able to atleast take the first steps =D>

However, you should know that the odds of you becoming an F-16 pilot are not very good, you're more likely to fly the PoS F-22

Yeah, that's right, I hate the F-22 :smt019

But I'd still fly it given the chance :(

Actually I haven't really done any research. I just decided that I want to fly fighter planes :)

My dad told me they pay for your college, which is one reason I'm doing it. That's probably the only way I'll be able to afford college, unless I get a scholarship for soccer or academics(that one is doubtful, I'm not super amazing at school, just 93's across the board )

P.S. Any info you guys(ie. military folk :) ) can give me on careers paths in the USAF would be appreciated :)
