technically we have several different cultures (many, really). but we do have the common languange thing going for us. that and the supremacy of our national government. EU isn't quite to the point of one gov't telling all of Europe what to do.

Personally I believe it would come down to whether the US economy could sustain a war of this magnitude, and whether the EU could coordinate effectively. Both have extremely strong militaries and both have the potential to win. Therefore I shall be sitting firmly on the fence.

From an Australian point of view it'd be interesting if we got pulled into this. The US is one of our strongest allies, but we are also still under rule of the Queen. Granted she does squat in the governance of Australia, but we are still obligated to England. My loyalties would come down to whether or not we can still watch Family Guy if we were fighting for the euros :D .

As for Russia, I seriously doubt they would enter the conflict. They'd be down south planning the future with China.

Good point WW, us Aussies would get dragged into it depending on who struck first, if EU struck against USA then under the ANZUS treaty we would be there with bells on, however if USA struck first then we are not formally required to get involved. but considering we have been involved in every major war that has been fought over the last 110 years we would be sure to jump in there somewhere.

though the outcome of the war would depend on whom is invading whom, it is much easier to defend your own patch than it is to continually defend an ocean and air route to invade a foreign nation.

also the idea that it would be a "conventional war" is just silly, a small number of SAS / Commando troops can tie up a much larger conventional force whilst training civilians in guerrilla tactics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Timor
shows how 1000 commandos can tie up 12000 conventional troops plus enemy air, armour and naval support for a sustained period of time

all in all though only time will tell

I think conventional was pulled up as the US Army fighting an actual army will do better than fighting camoflauged gangs of fighters (aka Iraq), as that was what it is trained to do. While special forces missions would be used, insurgent tactics would not dominate a war such as this until one side or the other was thoroughly beaten. Also, a conventional war would eliminated the possible usage of nukes, which are too much of a wild card.
