agreed.
fairest way

the problem i see with this is if someone figures out how to get autobanned
they can then make the script ban them (for something non ilegal) and just sit back and wait for admin to unban them and create uu and naq for maybe a month if the admins are slow and they keep quiet about it..

Yea, but if the admin fixs the autoban there should be no accidental bans. If there is a hole they get banned, the hole gets fixed and then they get unbanned... So once it gets fixed there shouldnt be any unreasonable bans... The plan is JUST incase! ;)

ahh you have a PLAN why didnt you say so i feel so much safer now :)

yea but you wouldnt know when the account would be unbanned

Has anyone ever figured out what caused the false positives? One would think that going over the auto-ban setup and the logs of those who were unjustly banned should provide enough information to fix it... Of course we don't know how it works. If admin ever releases it under gpl he'd have a lot less work, as I'm sure several of us would be happy to do bug fixes...

This problem has apparently gotten worse over the last 2 days...since the autoban program was allegedly "modified".

Anyone else suddenly reminded of HAL-2000??

Should we ALL be learning the words to "Daisy"?

This is no longer a 'small problem, involving a few players'...judging from the new posts in the Banned/Cheater section over the last few days, this needs to be addressed NOW.

I mean, seriously...I'm getting ready to Ascend...but now I'm afraid to because it seems this is when people are being autobanned.

Hopefully all this will get sorted soon. It's getting more and more out of hand. I mean I have nothing against admin and the autoban thing is a good idea and a good way to help stop cheaters cheating but until the autoban is working properly it shouldnt be put into play.

And also the length you have to wait to even get a response is unbelievable.

I (re)ascended this weekend and didn't get problem, but well indeed better be careful there!

 I just got banned as well. Not sure why, my brother and I have been playing for almost 3 years. Now we are considered multi's?

we don't know why the autoban kicks in... I want Jason to release the autoban code so it can be reviewed by the sgw community.

He won't release the script to the public because it would make evading it easier.

I will make the suggestion at the meeting today that the ban script is modified to only flag certain types of cheating instead of immediately banning, that way the ban won't be applied until Jason/mark has reviewed it 1st. Far as i know that should be relatively easy to do, but i admit i am no expert on scripting this type of thing.

That is a common misconception. Security through obscurity is a flawed theory. Just take a look at Windows track record with security flaws... In any case, your idea that providing the code would make it easier to bypass is incorrect. Yes, crackers are able to see the problems, but so are all us hackers-and we can improve it, make it better, get all the bugs out. If open source truly were insecure none of todays web servers would be running linux now would they? But they do, and, properly maintained (as any OS should be) they're extremely secure. So please, do some research before you claim that showing code will cause trouble... I realize MS says these things-but they are the ones that have been found guilty time and time again of unethical business behaviors...

I think that the autoban is fine, lets just get admin to respond to those who email him within 48 hours. Otherwise that lets the cheat (who doesn't get blocked) flood the game with bad resources for a couple days...

I think it's blatantly obvious that the Admins can't respond within 48 hours, otherwise there would have been no need for this thread in the 1st place.

And as for the script being public i still disagree, why? Because linux is NOT secure and the reason MS software is so full of holes is because they care more about profit than quality, always have and always will.

If the autoban picks up something dodgy it should suspend the person immediately....otherwise people like Suttles will come back and make loads of $$$ before one of the admins gets chance to review the situation.

However, what should happen, is that the whatever the autoban picks up, should be sent to you when you get suspended so you know why you've been suspended.

The admins should look into the case within 48 hrs ideally.

You should be put on vac mode during the account suspension - if you get unbanned, it should be just like vac mode, and your realm restarts the next time you log in.

You should be brokered all the naq and uu your account would have made during the period of unfair suspension - that is, of course, assuming you're found innocent.

But scuttles didn't get autobanned and he DID make a small fortune selling resources, he was manually banned from what i recall.

Well, the fact that they haven't, and saying that they "can't" are two very different things. I think they can and should, and that would solve it. I hope we can hear from admin on this at todays chat.

Borek wrote:And as for the script being public i still disagree, why? Because linux is NOT secure and the reason MS software is so full of holes is because they care more about profit than quality, always have and always will.

while you may disagree with the script being public (something I disagree with, as its based on unsound security logics). I will accept that as your view.

I also will agree wholeheartedly with you on the fact that MS cares more about profits than quality. (As most corporations, they do whatever they can to make the most money).

However, I will disagree with you saying that linux is not secure. Of course it is not 100% secure. Any system that remains accessible and able for use always has vulnerabilities. However, linux is a well designed OS which is secure-much more so than the other two biggest OS's in particular.
