Re: Well I'm back!

actually, your all wrong...the roman empire was founded by the Trojans

those that survived the sacking of troy set up an internal empire just as they had in troy. it wasn't until the Roman locals took over that Rome became the empire thats recorded in the history books...

as for roman culture, lets just say that the Romans didnt have much of one so they borrowed other peoples culture from all over the Med :-)

Re: Well I'm back!

PS.

as for the Greeks not being able to fight when Rome was in the ascendancy i suggest you go do some research because many roman commanders praised the Macedonians for their courage and skill in battle.
you have to remember, when Alexander died Greece had already been subdued and none of the city states was in a position to put up much of a fight because of Phillips and Alexanders will to invade Persia (as well as the beating Alexander had dealt to most of the Greek states) required the rest of Greece to give everything for the war in the east thus leaving Macedonia as the master of Greece and the only power which could have matched the romans.

you also have to bear in mind that the romans learned much from the Greeks in the art of warfare and was only a natural consequence they would improve on the Greeks both the weapons and the tactics.

it would have been very interesting to see if the romans could have subdued the Greeks had all the states not already been subdued by Phillip and Alexander...

i HIGHLY doubt they could have.

Re: Well I'm back!

Virgil was the writer of the Aeneid, an account of the adventures of Aeneas, chief survivor of the Fall of Troy.
Written around 1AD, it was the Roman's official account of their earliest history, as the city called Alba Longa, founded by Ascanius (Aeneas' son) in a district of the county of Latium would later become the prime starting point from the creation of the city of Roma itself.

And seriously.. Greece stand against Rome, had the Macedonians not subdued them? The prime reason Macedonia subdued them in the first place was the incessant internal turmoil of the Greek Poleis. Aside from a lack of true politicians who looked BEYOND the borders of their own state..

:-)
Don't try and argue history with me.. it may have been a year since last I followed lectures on it, but it's still in my mind. Had I had the time, you wouldn't have been able to read my reply in less than a minute or five. ;)

Why? He was a Roman writer, pretending to be a historian while actually just copying the Odyssee and adapting it to a Roman theme, adding in some Roman myth of their own.. Not a big shame to make that mistake.

A few, but most are inconsequential. ;)

Exactly :D

Athenians had good fleets so whoever has the most fleets can be Themistocles

Anyway, What im saying is, Before the romans.

There where the greeks.

After the romans, There where still greeks.

Actually after the Romans, were the Byzantines who modeled their lifestyle as much after Middle Eastern culture and Roman Culture as Greek Culture. They were Greek Orthodox though ;)

NO NO NO NO!

The existence of Byzantines is a myth. There was never a Byzantine empire. There was a Eastern Roman Empire, never a Byzantine one. Somewhere along the lines, I believe in the 19th century, a historian started to use Byzantine to describe the Eastern Roman Empire.

If you went back in time and called Justinian a Byzantine he would laugh at you.

And for Roman creation.

Romulus and Remus were suckled by a she wolf. They gathered a band of robbers and rapists ect. They then ran over to sabine territory and captured the women. This is called the rape of the sabine women. And wa la you have Rome

You could very well be correct but I personally think Byzantine is the much cooler name :P Point still stands, though :)

And the Greeks lost against the Macedonians in part because of internal turmoil, but also because the Macedonians brought with them a more novel form of fighting. They used much longer spears and more effectively utilized cavalry in their attacks. There was a great battle at Chaeronea fought between the Macedonian army and a united army of Greek city states, including the biggest armies at the time of Thebes and Athens. This was a decisive victory because of the strategy employed by King Phillip that day. After that, Greece was effectively his as no Greek army could defeat him.
