seeing as its the most complex device ever built there could have been mechanical etc problems. if something was slightly out of calibration the experiment could have failed. many things could have gone wrong with the actual machinery invloved. the relief is probably that it worked 1st time with no major problems. if there had been something wrong they would take months to repair it. id be relieved if i found out id not have to wait months extra, after waiting decades.

btw stephen hawkings said the LHC wasnt dangerous. he said something like:
collisions of the energy seen in the lhc happen millions of times a day in our atmosphere.
