Ouch, dial up...? that must be like running your hand through a cheese grater when your being massed...

but, on topic, could it be the ads that cause the lag?

Haha

Nah, for SGW being a text based game, it goes (By my "dialup" standards) near instantaniously.. and that's with 2 msn messengers, facebook, and some updates going at the same time lol

Something I noticed recently. Alliance rankings are not just being calculated at the turn change anymore, but seemingly at 5-10 minute intervals throughout the change. That might be why the game is getting universally slow...

Alliance rankings don't need to be calculated every turn change anyway... Should be every hour at least....

Alliance, commander ranks should be like once per one or two hours, and ME ranks twice a day, if not unranked.

Alliance Rankings, Commander Rankings and M.E rank should be calculated once per week, like when the market resets, i dont see these as important ranks to be truthful,

Who cares where your alliance is ranked, it doesnt affect how you play,
Commander rankings are just a way of saying, look my officers are stat builders

M.E well most want it unranked,

Just make them 3 Ranking calculate 1 time per week, and see if it makes a difference.

I would say once a day, when the daily mantinace or what ever occures, and also remove the "compression" for a week and see if there is a change. Couple this with the removal of all the truely "Dead/worthless/useless/just taking up space" accounts and somethings got to happen.

The accounts that are not active, or that have not been logged into in awhile, will not stress the server, they dont generate anything thus they have no rank to recalculate,

Admin remove 20-40k accounts before that where inactive and it made no difference to the game lag.

http://www.gatewars.com/lag.php

is to test your basic, lag time, for no database

Time to Load Page lag.php at 16:16 : 0.000212 seconds

so i'm thinking it's the database.

Maybe the server is just sad because of PPT. It sees all those untrained safe from raiding and all that naq safe from attacks and it sheds a tear. Then it gets back to work only to come across more PPT. People can't play due to lag and so they hit PPT and the vicious circle continues. End PPT before it is too late...

Actually Lore has the right idea, it will take a bit of experimentation and investigation on the part of admin to find the problem and fix it. I think main is on its own server, which is why the others don't get hit by major lags at the same times that main will be experiencing major difficulties.
