Just thought I'd throw this together so you DDE lot can feel a little better about getting rekt by High Empty.
CHAPTER I: SEED OF TREASON
High Empty hunched over the documents littering his desk, each one detailing a specific skirmish. The war had been raging for weeks now, and by all accounts he had no reason to complain. Being a Commander in the Omegan Empire brought with it many perks and opportunities, and it did not hurt that they were winning the war overwhelmingly. For every Omegan soldier slain in combat, ten Dark Dominium Empire soldiers joined them. For every light-year of progress the DDE made, the Omegan Empire forced them to pay in blood and gold, and the toll was growing extremely high. Yet, unease flickered in the back of High Empty’s mind. He was no stranger to war, and he knew he was one of the best. More importantly, he knew exactly how long an opposing force could be expected to resist his aggression, and this war was proving to be an anomaly. The DDE’s resources should have run dry over a week ago, yet they continued to rebuild and restock effortlessly. It was almost as though they were being supplied with everything they needed.
High Empty removed his glasses and massaged the bridge of his nose, sighing, eyes screwed up. This would not do. As much as the Omegan Empire was dominating the enemy, their resources would not last forever. Nary an hour had past since he had dismissed the treasurer, Gandy, who was making more and more unrealistic requests as the days dragged on. Requests to deal a final blow to the DDE forces, to end the war. He just did not realise that it would come to nothing if the DDE continued to rebuild whatever damage they inflicted. Still sighing, he rose from his desk and crossed to the window. It is impossible for one to truly comprehend the infinite vastness that is space until one actually sees it with one’s own eyes, but it was a sight that High Empty was well used to by now. The entire vastness that he could see was under their tight control, but that didn’t stop the occasional spy from slipping through, gathering intel on their remaining forces and sabotaging their equipment. He knew they were slipping in, for as much as they left evidence of their presence through the damage they caused, they were also detected and publically executed just as often. It was a sight he always enjoyed seeing, and the shadow of a smirk would play over his face whenever one of the DDE dogs was put to death. Not because he hated the DDE, but because of his insatiable bloodlust. If he was perfectly honest with himself, the only thing keeping him in the Omegan Empire was the endless opportunities for combat.
His reflection on the efforts of the DDE spies could barely have come at a more opportune moment, as a figure moved suddenly in the reflection cast on the window. Turning swiftly, he caught the assassin’s arm as it descended, disarming and incapacitating him simultaneously.
“So the assassins are being ordered to target Commanders as well as covert agents now, eh?” He said disdainfully at the figure sprawled on the ground in front of him.
“I shouldn’t be surprised. If I were to suddenly disappear, the DDE would have a much easier time of winning this war. But as you are about to find out, that is not such an easy task…”
The assassin, however, did not leap for him again. Rather, he remained on the ground, holding eye contact. High Empty would not kill the assassin whilst he was still on the ground, whilst he was not an immediate threat. Not out of honour, of course, but because there was little sport in it.
“There is more than one way in which you can disappear, my Lord, and they need not all be against your will. You know as well as I do that you have reservations about the progress of this war. We have been amongst your ranks longer than you know, and the soldiers’ morale dwindles day by day. And when morale drops amongst the forces in such a way, the commanding officer himself is the source. They can sense it on you, you know, your lack of conviction in this war. It can’t be blamed, given how well-funded we are. Surely you of all people have noticed that by now.”
High Empty studied the assassin. To be sure, everything he had said was correct, and it bothered him that there had been DDE spies that had gone undetected in the Omegan ranks long enough for this encounter to occur. Seeds of doubt had been growing in his mind as to just how long they could besiege the DDE forces, and the assassin’s words only served to hasten their growth.
The assassin continued, “You and I both know that the Omegan Empire is not long for this world. Your Emperor talks of immortality, but you know that it is all rhetoric. The soldiers who die in his name certainly know that. And soldiers are most certainly dying. How long do you think you can hold before we push you beyond our borders? Before we begin to invade your own? You have seen that despite your monumental efforts, they are not bearing fruit. You are going to lose this war."
High Empty knew that as long as the DDE managed to keep replenishing their forces as they had done thus far, the assassin was right. His stoic features fortunately did not betray the turmoil he felt inside, a numb sense of doom slowly metamorphosing into panic. Above all else, he was a survivor, and he did not intend to stay loyal to a lost cause.
“But all is not lost for you, my Lord. You have impressed our leaders greatly, and they feel that your demise would be a tragic shame. Such a brilliant mind, it would be such a waste if you were to simply expire in our assault. You needn’t do that, you know. The DDE is not unwelcoming to those who would fight for our cause.”
It was exactly the out he was looking for. The oaths that he had sworn to the Emperor were binding, but they could not execute him for treason if he was not there. He backed away from the assassin, and discarded the knife. Crossing to his desk, he took two glasses and poured a drink into both of them. “I’m listening.”
