If there is a deputy, the oms should be able to pick from the other candidates. As said above, it's important that the two get along.

You have done a lot for the position in your time there. What areas do you see that need to be worked on?

I was thinking Captain and First Officer but that's just my perspective. Its the same thing in essence.

Well right now, if the ombudsman goes to the beach for the weekend, what is the process for handling disputes between admins and users?

I don't think there's any forum issue so pressing and catastrophic that it won't wait a few days.

The ombudsman has a fairly free reign in terms of what he can propose, though. If you get the position, then I'm sure the admin will be more than willing to consider the idea of a 'deputy' position being created.

I agree, but I also don't see the harm in it if it is like a vice president or first officer like Manny put it.

They are pretty much the same thing, but I was thinking that the "vice OMGman" should run with the "OMGman" candidate like a VP, so that the people know who all they are voting for.


At anyrate, I do agree with Mordack in that it's really not needed. I just don't see the harm in it so long as the "captain" is not required to confer with the "first officer" before doing anything.

Yes, that makes a lot of sense.

I'm strongly opposed to any kind of system where the ombudsman is elected, and can then select whomever he wants as deputy upon assuming the position. I shouldn't even need to go into the myriad of problems which that could cause.

For a user that is banned, a few days can seem a lot longer. If the ombudsman has a time frame standard to maintain then some alternative procedure needs to be in place, simply because it is not fair to the users/mods to put things on hold while they are away. It is also not good for the ombudsman to feel like he is letting the community down if he is on vacation.

The particulars of the VO selection process would have to be worked out if/when it is put in place.

for me, if i were to be elected Ombudsman, i'd set up a (very limited) command staff. Ok, they won't have any official powers, but at the very least i'd press for a junior/associate Ombudsman.

There are a couple of issues surrounding it that have been raised. Drawing from the other runners within the campaign, having the runner up assigned or even picking your own.

The only way of working together would be to pick your own second but there would have to be some recommendations to ensure that it's a fairer way of looking at things.

Alternatively, we know a couple of things,

Firstly, The second/junior/associate shouldn't have an actual position, it'd be totally unofficial. After all, they were not elected to the post, they were hand picked by (more than likely) a friend. Yes, they can be available when the Ombudsman can't, but that means squat to be honest.

Is the Junior going to review the cases whilst the ombudsman is away? i'd hope not

Are they going to spend their time trawling through mountains of posts to find a precedent regarding overturning of bans because of a loophole in the rules? doubtful

Would they be there as not only a 'sounding board' for the ombudsman but a true assistant to the role? I'd hope so

Yes, a banned user would feel aggrieved that the Ombudsman is away for 2 days starting on the day of the ban, it's totally fair for them to feel that way.....yes...if the ombudsman is away for a week or two, it'd probably be best to postpone the enactment of bans (or at least the ones where warnings are being contested) or failing that make arrangements for someone to post for the Ombudsman.

(personally, i could answer emails from my phone to another player and have that posted for me, i can answer wherever i am in the world, (except when i'm asleep))

anyway, when i return i'll work on my campaign some more...
