In game swearing - is there a need? An open discussion.

I've had a few people contact me via pm recently regarding in-game messages they have received that are full of swearing and insults, and asking what can be done about it.

To be honest, there is little we/you can do, other than blocking the sender.

All I can say is that if you do get lots of unwarranted and unwanted swearing/insults in your in-game messages that you keep a copy of them and notify the Admins - if it is really getting so bad!

Note I used the word 'unwarranted'...... It may be that their colourful message is due to a recent massing on your part, or that you may have been rude (intentionally or not) to them - or maybe they simply feel that it is okay for them to use that language with you, whether through familiarity or just because they think it is okay.

To be honest - it is all down to the recipient. Personally, because I'm an adult, and if other people I know relatively well send me a message with swearing or some kind of insult in it, I can accept it because I know them, know what they are like, and can give as good as I can get! On the other hand, if someone I didn't know was to do the same thing, for seemingly no reason, then I wouldn't be happy about it; I'd ask them to stop and block them if they refused.

So the question is - is there a place for swearing and/or insults in in-game messages? Personally I think there is - to a point! - but NOT the sending of such messages to people you don't really know.

Oh - and Merry Christmas to all! :-D

I think you should know who your sending it to before you send it. I was recently involved in an incedent were a planet was taken. The defender took the planet back and half massed the attacker sending a message that said "You have been warned". The response was laced with profanity and promises of never being able to play again. The defender in question was 13 yrs old. Everyone keeps saying that kids know all the words and we shouldn't protect them. I still feel like we should. Once you know someone I don't care the language used, but to see someone decide to stop playing because they are not willing to see that kinna language is an outrage to me.

I don't see where profanities should ever really be acceptable in this game. I'm one of the younger players, and I sincerly dislike it when people sling vulgaraties in my direction. Even after a massing, or the theft of a hefty amount of resources, I don't see how it's appropriate to swear.

I've been massed many times over, and never have felt the inkling of a need to cuss at someone. I suppose it may be a maturity thing? I can't imagine why someone who isn't mature enough to take a massing, and just carry on, is playing this game, though.

In short? Swearing isn't really appropriate. Swearing between friends, yeah, that's fine. But from one random to another, almost no matter the circumstance, not needed.

Merry Christmas, indeed.

just had an incident myself of this, finished a war with BWE, then received a pair of very inappropriate messages from one Raistlin Majere, so in kind i assassinated his ascended acct, decimated it :-D , and received a reply laced with insults profanity and other unmentionables...

This kind of behavior is just sick and uncalled for...i admit a few curse words here and there are fine, i use them all the time :P lol...but when they are strung together and meant in such a way that has no function other than to personally insult someone who you most likely know nothing about, that says alot about your character and how things need to be dealt with (acct wipe  )

P.S. He promised to get me back for what i did to him, but so far the only retaliation ive faced is him going to purg then vacation for main and ascension (as a result i never got to finish his acct off after getting the last, worst message)

If you get all upset over messages or peoples language, the internet is not the place for you...

Swearing to an extent is tolerable. Now if some sent a message saying "you **Filtered** **Filtered** wad I am going to castrate you and then make you eat my **Filtered** that would be a different story."
Now if someone sent a message saying nice hit you ass I wouldn't be upset.

Do you see where I am going. Words are powerful. How they are used can mean a lot.

Due to the word filters my post isn't going to be as meaningful.

Well I just see it like this, I guess some people think its funny to see Kids talking like that. Some do not. Either way the discussion is mute as nothing will ever be done about it. People will act however the mood strikes them so meh.

Yes.. Jake has it. When you consider how the internet is as a whole, it's surprising how many ridiculously thin-skinned people play here.

It wasn't a 'look at me' thread at all - I don't think I need one do I? It was posted as it still remains a concern for some people in-game, judging by the complaints I get about it.

Indeed, I could just as easily say that your claim that this is a 'look at me' thread is in itself a 'look at me' plea, as it seems to serve no other purpose!

I do agree with you however that if people get overly upset with others' language, then perhaps they need to be more cautious on the internet.

On the other hand, continuous and unnecessary swearing shows a lack of vocabulary and original thought, and more often than not makes the sender out to be ignorant and uneducated.
