New Revised Tutorial for setting up mIRC
Note: the links in this thread are to screenshots of the steps i'll be talking about
Sorry they cant be direct images, but the forum has a restriction size for images of a maximum width of 600 pixels, which is way too small (don't want you all hurting your eyes squinting at tiny images)
This Tutorial is based on the (then) latest version of mIRC: Version 6.31
Firstly, you'll be needing yourself a copy of mIRC, which can be found at:
http://www.mirc.com/get.html
After downloading, let the install program run and it will now be located at a default of C:\Program Files\mIRC\mIRC.exe
Run either that or the desktop icon.
You will then see a slash screen along the lines of:
Notice this is for a registered version, you may have the unregistered version, which is free. If so, just click "Continue"
You will next be brought to the following screen:
Full Name: This does not have to be your Real Name
Email Address: This does need to be your real email as if you loose your password, the IRC Operators will use this to identify you, should you need your password reset
Nickname: This is the name you wish to use while chatting to others in IRC
Alternative: This is a second nickname you may wish to use incase the first is currently in use
Heres an example:
The next section will outline how to add the Sgw IRC server into your network list, and connect to it.
In the same options screen, there is a menu called "Servers"
When you open this, click the "Add" button, which will bring you to the following screen:
Enter the details as shown.
Description: SGW IRC
IRC Server: irc.night-networks.net OR irc.gamesadvantage.com
(please ignore any mention of irc.pptwars.net in the images, this is an old server which has been discontinued)
Ports: 6667
Group: SGWIRC
It will now show up in the networks list:
click the "Select" button on that screen and go back to the "Connect" menu
It will now show:
Click the "Connect" button.
The following will now show:
A "Favorites Box" may pop up. click the options on that not to show again, as there is a much better way to connect to all your favorite channels.
FIRST TIME IRC USERS:
You may need to register your nick, to do so type the following:
/ns register your_password_here your@email.here.com
as shown here:
The email used here does need to be your real email as if you loose your password, the IRC Operators are able to resend your password to you
Your password in no way can be viewed by anyone unless they know how to crack a md5 checksum (which isn't going to happen by anyone)
For Existing Java to mIRC users:
You will just need to identify, to do so type the following:
/ns identify your_password_here
as shown here:
Joining Channels:
For first time users, you may want to join the following channels:
#stargatewars - For all general StarGateWars Chat
#tradeserver - the trading channel for IRC
#theplace - where the weekly Admin meetings happen
to do so, type the following:
/join #stargatewars,#tradeserver,#theplace
as shown here:
which will produce the following:
How to automatically connect to channels:
In the options menu, which can be found from either Tools > Options or by pressing ALT+O, you can find the "Connect Options" menu which is located under the "Connect" tab
as shown here:
Tick the "Connect on Startup" box. This enables mIRC to connect to the server as soon as you run it, instead of manually having to click the connect button each time.
Click on the button "Perform"
This is the list where you can tell mIRC what to do when it connects to a certain network, ie: to identify you, connect to certain channels etc.
It will bring up this screen:
Click the box "Enable perform on connect"
Followed by the "Add" button
This will bring up a list of all the networks saved to your mIRC info
Find the SGWIRC network, as shown here:
Once highlighted, click "OK"
It will then take you back to the previous screen, but now with SGWIRC available in the drop box.
Select SGWIRC and you can now enter what you'd like to happen when you connect to the server.
This is an example of what you may have:
Other useful things:
Here are some other useful settings to have enabled.
Use the pictures as a reference.
If you've made it this far, most of those are pretty self explanatory.
Also is you start hearing beeps from your computer all the time, one good thing to do is to turn the sound off for mIRC
Use the following picture as a guide:
To Wrap Up:
If you have any questions at all, just go through the normal Java portal and feel free to contact either me, or even any other user:

Re: mIRC Setup Tutorial - To connect to SGW IRC Chat
just a small amendment to the current connection rules.
For those in schools that block the normal irc port of 6667, we have opned port 8080 for that purpose.
your connect should be - irc.pptwars.net:8080
opened 8080 as its a normal port for proxy use, so most schools shouldn't have that blocked.
enjoy,
