When you are attacked by a player using mercs, what do they show up as?

Actually I don't think they show up as mercs...but as normal (non-super) units.
Example:
The army of XXX stormed the realm of YYY!
XXX sent:
1 Assassin and 10,000,000 Super Soldier and 14,000,000 Raiders
Careful and thourough observation records that the troops were armed as follows:
10,000,000 Super Soldier have Armed Military Fleet
12,500,000 Raiders have Armed Military Fleet
1,500,000 Raiders came unarmed!

They show up as normal attack units and when defending an attack they are regular defense units.

why do peopel buy those untrained mecs and keep?

Some ppl keep them keep while ascending for ascension points, I'm not sure if this is of any use.
Other reason to buy the is to use as "bank", though you can sell them only at 6/10 of their buying price.

Some just like collecting things.
As for mercs = APP,,, you get more APP from raw naq then you get from the mercs you buy with that naq.
