To one who reads out loud, "Fak3r" can be pronounced as a certain swear word.

Yep, I think this was meant to refer to someone who fakes something, i.e. to be a phony, but depending on your accent it might be pronounced as a swear word. I don't really think it is improper, the link to a swear word is a bit sketchy.
