Aye! That goes for the English too.. heck.. us continentals produce more complete sentences as the average Brit.

Not to mention our improved accuracy in describing issues and addressing people.

ahhh well I speak from a Biased point of view..I speak perfect english after all...though my typing is a little sloppy.
Even down to keeping the no's to a no, and the twenny's to twenty.
funny thing was I was only lecturing a group of little children in my amusement arcade today about the merits of using correct english. No one seems to teach it right these days...
its all just so sloppy..omitting letters, extending the wrong vowels...absolute anarchy.
Then again Auriel, it was not the english complaining about foreigners using our language, but rather our children using it first before moaning.

Well, it was voted on that English would be the language of the United States. If someone wants to speak another language, then let them. Although it won't do any good when they live in a country where the common language is English.

I'm welsh and love having and speaking my own native language, it adds identity and history to you and gives you a way to hold onto a small part of your country which is increasingly difficult with the vast number of immigrants forcing their own culture, traditions and language onto our locality.
So for that i think it would be good if the US had its own unique language but seeing as it hasnt really got one (maybe native indian but the majority of US citizens arent of that blood line) then english is the appropriate language for them imo
Don.

Absurd. Thats nazi like tbh. You do know about those pesky minorities and their rights, do you?
Learn about it, in 50 years you english speakers will be evoking them to latinos that will create and win polls about how spanish should be the main language of the Estados Unidos.

I can understand the fear that motivated this response because for many of us it is aggravating to drive down the road and see more flags of other nations then our own Flag flying. However it must be pointed out that if you look at the origins of this country you will find that all immigrants started out in communities that all spoke that nations langauge and even harbored alot of nationalistic pride. Some times this even became very scary as in the issue of the friends of germany which existed for a short time during the depression.
Withinn a few generations though these comunities assimilated to the american culture and today you wouldnt even know that there was ever anything like that.
What I am saying is that in time every culture assimilates if allowed to do so in their own way.

Although this was said in jest I think it important to pont out that the spread of english across the civilized world is not because of the refined english dialects but rather because of the loose and slang filled american dialects which manages to meld the english language with many cultures including very colorful ones as the Black American (I am refferring to the early Black Americans influence but this also applies to the intercity cultural dialects as well) In all it's the diversity of culture that has given rise to the spread of english. Case in point the current use of Japanesse english being used in the arcades of asia.
Of Course I would be remiss if I didnt also elude to the imperalisticnature of English in that it has become a requirement of buisness to speak english and this is because of the strong western influence around the world.
I am for English as the official language of the U.S. because it is simply an issue of culture and national identy.
