You can buy the platform, but @ the moment you can't assign them, or improve them.

when looking at the planets there is a button for the platforms

i just assigned mine, and added defences....
can you explain where you are, what you are doing, and what errors (if any) you get??

sorry - works for me - although they are named 1, 1 and 2
