lol, nice one
personally i think by the time you reached the center you would have picked up so much momentum that you would pop out the other end, whether you could guide yourself to land away from the hole or how high you would go before gravity brought you down i leave that to the imagination...but i don't discount the possibility that you could end up bouncing between the 2 points till you end up in the

center
great topic

How would an increased gravity make you slow down?

Oh, you mean once you've passed Centre-point?

Well.. in any case, you're restricted to the hole you drilled. You will never 'fly out' on the other end, for the same reason why an elastic ball doesn't spring up higher if you let it drop (without extra force).

Agree with Lois - I think it's going to be a simple harmonic motion with a constant decaying rate. Meaning that you're going to see-saw around the center point, all the time with decreasing amplitude, until you're stuck in the middle. Of course you're larger than the middle, so your toes might end up wanting to go up while your head wants to go down. Talk about an identity crisis...

There's the thing of course that there is no absolute centre of the Earth, it being not round and all..

(harmonic being the word I was looking for, thanks Tacet)
Anyway. If you're one foot away from the centre, there will be hardly any gravity, since gravity is related to the relative masses. If you are inside an object, I doubt normal gravity applies.
If the Earth were of perfectly uniform composition, during a descent to the centre of the Earth, gravity would decrease linearly with distance, reaching zero at the centre. In reality, the gravitational field peaks within the Earth at the core-mantle boundary where it has a value of 10.7 m/s², because of the marked increase in density at that boundary.

someone uses wiki i see

for all those who can't understand this:

but things are more interesting:
there should be some atmosphere inside that hole of yers. so if he jumped assuming standard skydiving position:

he would quickly accelerate to about 120 Mph (terminal velocity of a falling human being with arms and legs outstretched), maintained that speed for a while and then gradualy slow down.

was gonna mention the terminal velocity thing aswel. you would need a lot of food for your journey due to the distances invloved using calcs i guessed lol it could take a day to reach the centre (seriously inaccurate math

).
i think the person would pass by the centre then start back the way they came very soon after. you wouldnt build up enough momentum on the down trip to take you far once you are going against gravity. theres something called (i believe) a lagrange point (?) which is a place where gravity cancels itself out. for example the area between the earth and moon where their gravity is balenced. so if you put something there it stays where it is. maybe a planet has this, and being at the exact gravitational centre of the world you would just float there. . .
interesting thing to think about mate

A journey to the center of earth...they made a movie about it!
If you jump there you'll come infront of dinosaurs and other creatures like that!
Anyway it would be really funny to arrive with feet first on other side like if you jumped up but with head on bottom! Not that gravity would allow it though.

Forgot the quote code.

Hmm Lois, your idea about no absolute grav point makes sense. The implications are ... cute, however. Once you're close to the centre you have a large, almost uniform mass all around you, which leads to your being pulled outward in all directions at once. Split personality, maybe?

I think you will grow.. unless it really is like your feet are falling both in different directions, your arms too and similarly your head.. that would screw you up bigtime.

Growing vs stretching...
What do you think is in there, in the middle? And is the different layers we have the result of that stuff stretching or growing?
@KMA - I think you're right. That's not an experiment I'd like to try!

as SuperSaiyan said, i dont think anyone would like to try it...but thats not taking into account mans curiosity (or his/her stupidity).

A new form of capital punishment, maybe. Heh heh, let's start digging!
