This is a little far off in the distance but... what exactly do you need to ''ascend''?

You need 1001 glory and reputation points, you start collecting these every turn once ypu get to about rank 1700 or higher. Once you have 1001 G&R a lovely button pops up in your command centre for you too click

When you get that button you click on it and it gives you a detailed list of all your requirements. Then if you click the next button you do the ascention if you meet the requirements.

If you have full suporter status (aquired by paying 20$, trading 1001 g&r or ascending) then you can keep most of your uu and naq by brokering to a friend.

Do not upset System Lords
Basically recon your opponents, check there commander and CHECK if they are at war!
And, if you role play make sure you are prepared for being hit, some players get a bit confused with rp/real life.

So... In the long run, it's not worth it to invest into orbital platforms, mothership upgrades, etc..?

Its not worth putting alot of naq in to any of those thing but you can get the first few MS upgrades and first 20-25 spy levels etc

IMHO, platforms are well worth the investment.
MS techs are not worth it till you have ascended to a reasonable (LG + 1) level.
The tech page will be wiped out when you ascend.
Don't spend a lot in fleets unless you plan on stealing planets (it upsets people to have planets stolen).
