looks like they'll be doing it afterall. making our net EVEN SLOWER and even MORE expensive.

now despite the test stages proving an abismal faliure, the ministers still BLINDLY seem to think its great. not to mention the financial situation were in, the government wishes to WASTE OUR MONEY on it......

[/rage]

also those who are australian, lets spread the word. seriously, this is ludicrous. theyre talking about implementing this before the end of the year.

These days everything you google can be inappropriate for kids. It's very broad.

Maybe he's being pushed by the porn industry. Think of the billions of dollars they lose per year because anyone with the internet can download it for free. Won't somebody consider the feelings of all the sleazy pimps out there?? :(

Are you saying you're a sleazy pimp?

Me? Hell no, but I'm sure collectively, their unimpressed by how easy and FREE it is to download just about every sordid or morbid picture, dvd, story or web cam feed.

I'm quite happy that they're losing out from this glorious invention (internet), but at the same time, I think its PARENTAL responsibility to keep their kids off the internet, or if they must go on, that they find their own filters.

Society should not have to suffer the same restrictions.

I'm still unhappy about the fact that every pool in Australia, (I think its Australia, it could be just Vic, but who knows), now has to have a fence around their pools or ponds in case some child wanders into their back yard and drowns in their pool. This rule still applies even if you live in a rural community in the outback where there are NO kids. It costs a lot of money to fence pools because they need to be specifically fitted and such. So you're forking out hundreds if not thousands of dollars to child-proof your back yard so someone who isn't looking after their kid can rest easy knowing even if they do slip out of sight out they won't drown...

I can see a lot of people disagreeing with me, but its just another case of everyone paying the price of parents who aren't taking responsibility of their kids.

I say we should have small kids on a leash too. They may have small legs, but they are fast!

well i agree with you both that it comes down to parental responsibility etc...

the simple fact is that there are many MANY thousands if not hundreds of thousands of australians who will be restricted to a system that is in place only in countries like North Korea and Iran.

this system will cripple our already rediculously slow infrastructure and force ISP prices up.

yet despite the performance losses and much more effective software available to download thanks to the Howard administration, the Rudd administration seeks to limit our choices, and cripple us. the system is inefficient, and a HUGE waste of money and considering the global financial 'climate' today, this is an incredibly brash and immature move.

You don't remove the symptoms and destroy free choice, you provide knowledge and tools to the parents to stop the risks to small children. i mean sure illegal sites are already blocked but it is claimed that 1% of legitimate sites will be blocked. now how many sites does this equate to? considering the volume of data on the internet, even this 1% equates to hundreds of thousands of sites that will lose out to this. and the system is also flawed, who determines the blacklist? and if a site is accidentally blacklisted, how do we see about it being removed? and originally there was going to be an option to 'opt out' or not have the filtering, but it looks like this wont be the case.

Government censorship. a DIRECT and blatant disrespect for our rights.

Thats why I want to spread the word and at least have the awareness spread. If not encouraging Australian citizens to convey there concerns to their local government official or representatives.

I don't quite understand how they plan to censor the internet though. I clicked that link and it's sort of just propaganda against the Rudd Government, whom I voted for and have enormous faith in.

How would/does any government restrict what we can receive via internet connection?
