ppl can be extremely smart in things that can bring them some profits, and infinitly stupid in more general matters.

Can judge the majority of the "Western people", but you'll have to take a large leap of faith with me in order to accept my gross overgeneralisations for the sake of argument.
I'm sure the Western majority is by now so apathetic that they can be considered "infinitely dumb". (Has anyone looked at the decline in new, substantial additions to our 'global source of all knowledge', WikiPedia? And the rise in discussions about the most trivial things on such a site?)
As I said, depends what dumbness we talk about. Is it from natural ignorace or from avoding to learn, by your own will.
Still talking about Western people here.
What you get is people who think they need to explain why everything seems to go downhill (actually, it doesn't.. we're pretty much at a standstill in the Western world, until we've been caught up and overtaken by other 'cultures'), and they do so by responding to their environment and leadership with an increasingly self-supporting paranoia. Getting ridiculed for their ideas strengthens their belief that the rest of the world is stupid as hell, and makes them even more convinced of their 'truth'.
There are idiots everywhere, and sadly it's not that wrong to think that rest of world is a menace to us, because of what our ancestors did to them, and also because of little groups of fanatics and fools who manage to be followed by many in those places.
Western people are typically so sure that their electronic assistance is reliable and trustworthy that they no longer question their environment and, as a consequence, lose the ability to think critically, independently. When people start blaming TV for their misery, you know they are 'a lost cause'. After all, TV's have 'off'-switches. You do not have to watch TV, if you want to take a hike, for example. Most Western people nowadays are content to leave hiking to holidays and extravagant, extraordinarily rich people. 'tis a shame, hiking is much fun. Expand the argument, and see that Western people tend to rely on electronics for everything. Why? Because we can. And monkey can, monkey do. Do something too long, and you forget you once had the opportunity to not do it.
Lol..."public opinion" only exists since XVIIIth century, because of the critical low amount of people being able to read and write (and learn things). People in past said it was Gods being angry at them, and punishing them. It might be accurate sometimes, but in general, not better than blaming TV. As for hiking...it depends where you live. Some places are just not worth to walk in, and anyway, weather is too crap for a good part of the year (snowing, long raining...). There's nothing much exciting in doing so, unless you live near Nature, or close to a touristic place/city (Paris, Roma, Madrid...).
As I said, I cannot judge the majority of the people of this Earth. Western people, yes.. I can reach.. but it'll always be an inaccurate overgeneralisation with loads of holes in it. Still, I believe the core of my argument is true, and while it may not be too obvious, it'll show soon enough. If not, then I'll be glad to have been proven wrong!
Anyway, last thing, sort of like a parting remark.. people, wherever you are, please. Take your own responsibility and don't blame your government, your church, your parents, your brother, your sister, your dog.. you are the only one who can 100% certainly make a difference in your own life.(Do be on the lookout for people that change your life, they are very important!)
It's a bit easy going there...if people were able to do as they wanted/wish in their life (within laws and rules of course), without being influenced by "outside" things, I think it would be well known, and we wouldn't be where we are now. There are many things that we can't change (ie: drop of shares value we might own). It's called social determinism on career/life factor. And sadly, it's oftenly proved to be true. But indeed, rather watch out for who we meet, sometimes those people can change things.
Good.. this was long. I would love to hear from people in other cultures.
