I know we have a lot of players from the land down under (Australia) and I'm reading about the the wild fires caused by the heat, just want you guys to check in (Friend or Foe) to make sure your doing ok.

yeah, some bad fires around for sure, hope everyone from the aussie sgw community is ok.

We're ok in Sydney. It's Victoria thats burnt to ashes this time. Condolences to the families of the 40 so far who have lost their lives. GL to the volunteers fighting the fires and I hope they catch the bastards who lit them.

CFA Summary of incidents Victoria

I work in the Yarra Valley in the same building as the CFA Office for that area so I'm sure they are working hard.

Hopefully the week of cooler weather can be put to good use in controlling the still uncontrolled fires and in putting out others. The problem then of course is that they will smoulder underground so if it heats up again they can flare again.

Here's hoping for some heavy and long lasting rain!

I do hope everyone is ok in oz, but i always thought that the fires that haven't been started by some pyro is something that has been happening for ages and promotes new growth and is part of the natural cycle! i could be wrong tho as i'm extremely drunk! ~Thamuz~

Thamuz, they are a necessary part of the aussie bushes routine, yes but they were established by the indigenous population and thus the plants adapted.

The problem with the current fires is the temperature (40C +), the wind (strong northerlies), the fact that in a lot of cases they are deliberately lit, and of course the ongoing and very severe drought. Right at the moment we don't have the water to fight them very effectively. Not to mention the effects on water yield for our (Melbourne's) catchments if a fire does go through there. That would be VERY long term bad news for us, and the situation here with water, is already grim.

It's usual for Australia but the north is having floods, the south is in extreme drought.

and glad the heat wave is finally over, went from 40 to 20 over night lol

I thoughts and prayers go out to all those in the East that have lost loved ones, homes etc..

death toll 80+ and rising, hundreds of houses destroyed and small townships gone completely levelled.

One of the worst fires in Australian history.

I hope the rest of you in the effect areas, manage to stay safe.

Also my thoughts are with those in Qld battling floods.

south aus too, and i just got back from sydney........ while smoke blanketed the CBD it wasnt from a fire nearby.... damn wind.........

but yeah safe and all. my thoughts are with those effected by all this.
