Defense on Command Stars

I quote from the game updates page:

"If there is an opposing star, they clash. If the offense is greater than the defense of the opposing star, the remaining force of offense is focused on the opposing stars offense capacity. If there is force remaining after that, it can infuse your fleets."

In other words: Bob has a command star with 1 mil attack, I have a command star with 750k defense and 750k attack. His 1 mil attack defeats my 750k defense, and 250k attack are left over. That 250k then engages my command star offensive capacity, in which case he loses by 500k. Right?

So, what's the point of having defense on mothership at all? Can someone explain it to me if I'm missing something, but how is that battle different from if I had 1.5 mil attack on my command star and no defense at all...

The remaining offense attacks the offensive capabilities of the enemy mothership, however, I do not believe that the offense will fight back. For example, if your mothership had no defensive capabilities and I attacked you, I would not suffer any damage to my mothership.

But motherships don't take damage unless you destroy the weapon! And how often does that happen?
