A Sig Question?

Was wondering how you go about making sigs that have a transparent background, so that anywhere there is a blank canvas, it turns transparent. I've been looking around for awhile now and tried a bunch of different things but there's only so much I can do with dialup >_<
For making Sigs I use Fireworks MX 2004
Any help appreciated, thanks

Make layer from the background layer and set it to transparency by sellecting the entire canvas and deleting it.
If you want to make a sig with characters outside the borders, make the canvas bigger than the sig. The background set on transparency must be applyed here too.

Trying to do this, I don't think I've figured out how yet though.. >_<

sigs need to be saved as a png. file in order to preserve transparent layers, and when u make the sig do it normaly then increase the canvas size to make images 'break out of the borders'

Ahhh, I remember reading that somewhere lol. I've been exporting my sigs from PNG to GIF, that would probably be why lol. I'll try uploading the PNG file of the sig, it's 20x the file size though o_O

.gif also preserves transparency

This is a .gif file. The portion outside the sig, where the gate is bigger than the sig, is transparent.

I know how to "hypothetically" do that, if I could get the transparent background to work with a .gif image
Here's the PNG file of the sig.
It worked lol, only took about 10 mins of uploading to PB and then downloading from the forums

Alright, so I now know that .png works, but it takes years to load with dialup
Still don't know how to make a transparent background work with .gif though >_<

The simple answer? You don't. It's not extremely complicated but a .png is simpler, probably has a smaller file size, and the image will probably be of better quality.
Only use a .gif for transparency if you have to include both animation AND transparency.
