She is dieing!! My poor old PC, of around 11 years, is finally comeing to an end after all the abuse , wipes, virus's, spywares, websites, internets, porns (gIGGLE) ,downloads and so on. She only stays on for around half an hour then shuts down, time to set up my shiney new lap top.
RIP Boris, We hardly knew ye!

You`ve not been detailed about the symptoms, ok so its getting on, btw Boris is aweird name for a girl PC, but there still might be life left in the old girl.
Heads up on a very common cause.
Have a look at the capacitors on the motherboard, preferably when its powered down.
A "good" capacitor will look like a tin can sitting on top of the motherboard.
A "bad" blown or partially blown capacitor will have bulges or spilts in the segments on the top.
If they look fine try running the PC with the side(s) off to see if if lasts longer than say 30mins.
Or it could be a fan problem or heatsink thermal paste issue or a power supply problem. It feels good when you get to the bottom of the problem, wheras throwing money at it bypasses or cures the fault......but isn`t as satisfying.
Feel free to pm me ingame and let me know how you get on.

well i dare say it isnt something to try and fix, he did say the old girl Boris is 11 years old...... that puts her in the realms of a Pentium, Pentium MMX or a Pentium II (i beleive....... most likely a MMX, my old PII was about 10 last year)... in either case, i'd be frustrated. old tech, new games etc.... (i was only using a Pentium II for probably 3 years, then i upgraded. oh teh releif)
and if you know where to look, buying parts for computers then building them is really cheap and easy compared to dealing with Dell or a large consumer chain.

quick make a backup.
I made an amateur mistake and did not do so, just as I decided to ensure my laptop was sufficiently dead to claim insurance for a new one

pull the hard drive out of it, then kill the thing!!! (turn it of first.... LOL)
doesnt matter if its a desktop system or a lappy, you can get USB enclosures that you can put it into, then plug it directly into new system with USB......
fortunately my old machine didnt have anything valuable on it when my frankensteined pentium II pentium III was replaced XD
(mind you i beleive it still runs, just havent turned her on in...... over 3/4 years? i liek mah Skye..... see buckeh, much prettier name for a hotbox than Boris

and no, it isnt a reference to any person(s) living or deceased..... just imagine it without the 'e'.)
