I am looking for some inspiration in finding a few new PC games for multiplayer.

Some of my favourites that I play with semper, iron duke and my flatmate have been:

-LOTR: Battle for middle earth 2 (+ expansion)
-Star Wars: Empire at war (+ expansion)
-Sins of a Solar Empire
-Hearts of Iron 2
-Counter Strike Source

What are your favourite's? and what would you recommend for a small group to play?

One of my favorites is Age of Empires.

I have

Age of Empires
Age of Empires Rise of Rome(expansion)
Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings
Age of Empires 2: Conqourers (Expansion to AoK)

If anyone wants to IP in on one of those get at me I dont mind pwning you guys.

things like this. oh, and Unreal Tournament. in particular 1999 GOTY edition WASOLD BUT EPIC. 2003 i think was good... a few others but i cant remember them.

I have Age of Empires but never played it online...

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos
Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne
Starcraft: Brood War

I haven't played RoC in a while but I think it's better than the expansion tFT because all people play online in that is DotA (custom games at least) now... literally, and it's a pretty dumb game in my opinion. You can still play the actual game, non-player created maps, and it's fun .

team fortress 2 is quite fun

I've never played either of those maps, never even seem 'em hosted!!! I play Helms Deep infrequently but it's kinda boring. I played LotR maps on Warcraft and I pretty much owned... never lost xD

DotA is still fun on LAN tho

any of the UT iterations
the Painkiller games

I'm sure if i think of any more i'll add em but that should be more than enough for several days hard deathmatching & co-op play, at least on hard/nightmare settings.

counter strike & wc3 were my favorites

agreed dota got boring but there are some other fun maps like vamprism and binders, etc bit of td is nice occasionally

Have to agree with Empedocles starcaraft Broad war was fun but looking forward to starcraft 2 but the red alerts were good too.

Ya well I lost my collection of maps for WCIII so I could host 'em if I got 'em but no one would join, the best games were TD ones and Vampirism was pretty fun too, among many others.

I really am looking forward to SC2 as well . Should be pretty awesome.
