End of the World Movies

What the hell is up with every last end of the world movie not having a real story and/or really cruddy plots? Seriously, it seems like these movies are nothing more then excuses for Hollywood to make lots of eye candy and call it a movie.

Why is it so difficult for Hollywood to make a good story? Video games can do it. The Japanese can do it. Cartoons can do it. Networks can do it. Comics might be able to do it. Why can't Hollywood do it? -_-

for the same reason the Halo film never got anywhere, they always have to "change" things to make it more marketable to certain demographics, about they just take the Halo story, add some dialogue, and film it

the halo film is still being made :D inside source.

Indeed, slated to come out in 2012...and I must say the fact that Peter Jackson refused to let it be filmed without proper funding gives me high hopes that it might actually turn out to be decent...

Hollywood does not bother staying true to the story. They focus more on star power and special effects. And there is something to say for star power at least. I have seen some movies with a lot of potential fall flat on their faces because the lead actors were terrible.

Just keep steering people away from the stories that Hollywood has ruined and recommend the things that work.

For example:
Sunshine
Premise: A+
Acting quality: C+
Special effects: B
Plot: F-
Overall: F- The plot killed this story that had so much promise. It was so bad that if everything else had been A+ the overall rating would still be F-.

As you can see by this example the plot for me is one of the most important elements for enjoyment of a movie. I know people that prefer a movie to be eye candy. I know that if they recommend a movie to me then I will probably not like it unless they preface the recommendation with something like "Not my type of movie, but I think you will like it." Whose opinion will the majority of Hollywood value? The guy that goes to 12 movies a month and obviously enjoys what Hollywood is doing, or the guy that is so dissatisfied with Hollywood that he only goes to 3 or 4 movies a year.

I always kinda liked 'end of the world movies', and I liked Sunshine mentioned above. Also just watched Southland Tales, chessy, very weird, very funny and recommend it to all :D

Well they made us watch 'The day after' in school, 80s nuclear war dealio ( NOT The day after Tomorrow ), so I guess that was intelligent and factual but for the most part movies are made to entertain not inform, and thats how I like em'

Hmm.. interesting point.. I thought 'Knowing' was good, but also really weird
at the same time.

Sunshine was okay up until the point where that thing appeared.
Watchmen SUCKED, but the finale 15 mins were interesting.
