Totally agree.

Actually Linux especially a correctly configured & setup distro is much more secure and able to do more than a similar windoze installation.

What you should do is use Linux as your primary OS and then have a windoze virtual machine to run games and win only apps that you have to have.

How do you do that?

You use a Virtual Machine server, under windoze software like VMware can be used (dont know if they do a *nix version or not)

However most *nix distros now come with the Xen virtual machine server which is pretty much the same thing.

You do a wee bit of partitioning... My laptop has Ubuntu 9.04 on one partition and XP on the other. Then it spends most of it's life in my backpack while I play SGW on my 10-year-old Mac.

Actually what Kit-fox is talking about is not a dual-boot as some have suggested (a good option though that I'm currently using). He's suggesting running pure linux and then within linux you run a virtual server of windows. This allows a linux user to still run windows programs without having to reboot the system to access the dual-booted OS. I'd recommend a fair bit of memory if one wishes to try this route though.

If Windows is properly set up, and the user is not an idiot, then it too can be quite secure. If you have the knowledge, the time and the skills to properly setup and configure a Linux install, then you might as well save some time and effort and just install Windows.

I can't imagine the amount of resources one would need to run a moderate PC game at moderate settings with the setup you've suggested.

Same kind of specs Vista pretty much requires. As to why choose linux of windows...it's about customizing and having more control. It's also about resource utilization. A 2GB ram Linux box probably runs about as fast as a 4GB windows box.

Not much I have a basic q6600 with 6Gb ddr2 ram and with now what would be considered a rather inferior motherboard (asus p5k-e/wifi-AP) along with an 8800GT and this rig which is now pretty basic handles everything fine. It will run a native linux or windows system and a virtual machine of the other without any kind of performance loss.

So you dont need umlimited resources, or a hugely powerful rig.

I never tried Linux or Mac before, I only use windows.

But if I had a choice of what windows OS I want, I would more than likely to stick with Windows XP, Windows Vista doesn't seem to work with some programs like The Sims, when you try to save The Sims on Vista it doesn't seem to work, I had found a solution for it though, but forgot how.
