The "Why would you want to be a moderator" thread?

I see that more moderator positions have opened up on these forums, and I've just asked myself the question, "Would i want to be a moderator here?"
Last time there were moderator positions available, the answer was yes, I did, so I applied. At the time I was just returning to the game so I had a good amount of interest, I have never been a mod on these forums and the positions available were in those sections that interested me the most and I reguarly read (Market and For admin..). This thread isn't about me **Filtered** because my application was pushed aside filed under ZOMG BIAS, because i'm sure that wasn't the case and you had a good reason/better candidate for the role I was applying for. Instead I simply want to know what motivates the current moderators to keep modding, what makes people who are applying decide to apply and also why some ex-mods are no longer mods.
In short I want to know the good and bad points of modding the forum here, before I make a decision about whether or not to apply again.

Of course you should apply, But only if your passionate about the forum and the community, To me, the game has very little to do with it. I stepped down as admin simply because i had spent 3 or 4 years modding and admining the forum, and frankly, i think my debt to the community is payed , that and i want to persue my own things in real life, If you become a mod or admin, alot of your time is sucked away on here, even if you tell yourself you dont wanna be part of the politics and fighting, you will end up involved. Theres nothing anyone should have to say, No upsides, no downsides, You do something here cos you wanna help, cos you feel you have to, or cos you want to give something back. You do cos you wanna. Anyone who applies cos they think it gives them power, or authority, are downright wrong. Being a mod or admin means you have to hold you tongue, Means you have to be diplomatic, means you have to have the patience of a saint. You get to know lots of new people, new things, You become close friends with some people through the ties and problems and experiances you have on the forums.
To me its community, If you like the community, you wanna help, you wanna give back, then those are the 3 reasons i like to see. Anything else, Then your in it for the wrong reasons and you should take yourself away for a while. To anyone who wants to me a mod...You have to take it seriously, sure, but dont let it consume your life, if you have a problem on the forum, once your away from the PC forget about it, dont take it with you, That kinda thing.
I got more to say but i dont gots the heart to say it, I said so much in my leaveing speech(s) on the mod forum and admin forums that if any of you ever get a chance to read them, you'l see what i mean...

few reasons, personally:
1- I am here, so I might as well put it (my time) to good use
2 - I like the ability to see the dump
3 - I like the color
4 - it makes me feel distinguished
5 - I consider it community service, so I don't feel bad for being on the game all day
6 - kinda fun
7 - some people respect you more (mostly the newbies)
those are just a few off the top of my head
Pretty much says it all, same for me. Especially number one.

number 3 is an epic response haha. id see applying at this point a chance to put any comment you have ever had along the lines of "this modding seems bias" or "nobody mods the right stuff" or "hasnt been enough modding here" to good use. Lead by example if you want to change the world then show the rest how to do it positively and respectfully.

I agree more with buck for my as the main focus for my reasons for modding then SS's up there

It was all about giving something back to the community and helping out, i never did it for the recognition of the job, maybe a little for the name colour ill admit that

but yeah i have been here a while know, got to know some great people and have made some friendships outside your normal alliance ingame base which is great

Forum is a good place to relax and have some fun in the temple or RP in your race sections (SL v Ancients

) and i thought to myself might as well help out while I am here

As an ex-Mod I'd like to give my thoughts on this.
Firstly, I'd like to make it clear that i'm only an ex-mod because I quit back in March and wanted a break away from the forum (even if it was kinda short lived). If I hadn't quit i'd still be a mod (unless I seriously **self modded** Buck then i'd be dead).
I originally applied for Mod position because I wanted to keep the For Admin section (specifically cheaters, bans etc) tidy and orderly for Game Admins to deal with actions.
I also very much liked (I used "liked" because my opinions on somethings have dropped of late) this community and I wanted to help out by trying to keep things running smoothly (or as close as I could).
I then wanted to expand my role and therefore took on "General" section as a Mod, even though I knew there'd be many people that cry and threaten ingame retaliation for even the slightest modding against them in the GC.
I didn't do it because I like the name colour.... I'm not that shallow.
I didn't do it for the power, because really it doesn't give you power..... it gives you problems instead.
I felt that I was not at all a biased person as I am not associated with either FUALL or TTF (this was mainly at the height of the server war) and most of the time I was not associated with any alliance. Although may have been biased against cheats, but they deserved that.
Overall I enjoyed being a Mod. Yes it has it's bad moments, but there are also good moments. You do get respect from people, and on some occasions even get nice PM's of thanks etc etc. Honestly it's nice to get messages like that.
The reason i'm no longer a Mod since my return is because I was told I have to apply again. And I respect that desicion because it keeps this forum fair, and unbiased in some respect.
So I don't regret being a mod, I enjoyed it, and I believe it has actually helped me grow as a person.
Ok there you have it.

P.S. There is a downside to being a Mod...... you have to put up with Jack's smelly feet.

The Moderator forum is probably the best place to be on this forum. We can spam, we can have heated debates, swear at each other, and then hug and make up after. It has it's downsides sure..but every community/team has that.
Why do I keep moderating? I am here to make the forum a better place, even if I just moderate the Market I have some form of input on the changes that go around.

those little butttons aren't that important?
i think i'd like to become a moderator fro a few reasons but the main ones being i'd like to be able to improve the community and the experience of the forums for all the gamers, i'm not exactly rich, so i've never been able to contribute money towards the game!
but i'd like to be able to put something back into the community and make my mark in these forums.

A few phrases you guys have said jump out. "Debt to the community", "giving something back to the community".
I never considered myself to have a debt to the community. Sure I am a part of the community, but I don't feel a "debt". I dont feel like i've "taken" from others. If anything, i've already given more than i've taken. In three years i've made under 600 posts on these forums. I guess that says it all really about the amount of time that I spend here. It's small compared to many. I read the sections I like to read, I post where neccessary, but rarely where it is not. If someone asks a question, I do my best to answer it. If someone needs help, I do my best to help. I always have done and will continue to do so.
I do have a lot of respect for the people that donate their free time to help mod these forums. It would almost be considered noble if there wasn't a real world outside. I guess that is why I am questioning it. Yes I do want to help improve things, but I don't spend my life on these forums. As buck said, its impossible to avoid the politics. And i'm already too involved in the poltics. I play to have fun. But perhaps being a moderator is a way for me to better utlize what time I do spend here...
I just do not know. Maybe i'll flip a coin

Id like to become a moderator because id like to give back to the community that ive become a part of over the past 2 years. This has become my home on the internet (yes i have been yelled at for spending all my time here) and i have made friends all across the world from the game and the forums. I may not have a post count like thalteks, but, i do spend close to all my spare time here reading, and viewing, and posting where i can help. And since im on here 5-6 times a day, id like to help, instead of just Observing.

pick one of the seven deadly sins, whichever appeals to you most. there's your reason:
Lust (eh, can't think of one right now)
Gluttony - boost my posts up to 9000! feed my ego

Greed - power! power! more power!
Sloth - eh, I'm to lazy to argue. *bans*
Wrath - that bastard made fun of me! *ip bans*
Envy - why is HE a mod and not me?
Pride - yeah, I'mma mod. I'm better than you.
not that any of our amazing mods would do anything like this

I'd be ashamed to me a moderator and working with some of those who are. Some of the comments and the obvious disregard for respect and the general rules disgust me.
If your a moderator on a forum, and you respond to people with comments such as "people really just need to grow up" then you picked the wrong job.
Next time when applying for a job do some due diligence and learn what the job entails.
I'll be awaiting my warning and/or banning. As the last time I made a comment about a mod I got a warning or was it a suspension.
