XP system
I clean caches, temp files and internet cookies etc with an efficient small program called CCleaner.
I then run Malwarebytes` Anti-Malware to check for trojans and keyloggers.
Then I run I Avg free.
All available from download site:-
http://www.download.com or similar sites.
Theres lots of info on the internet on configuring these programs.
I avoid Facebook and Myspace.
This works for me.

Along with Norton, I use Smart Defrag for defragging and Advanced WindowsCare V2 once in a blue moon for random 'stuff'.. Other than that I do the rest manually.

I've got a new one

If you have any other PC problems I could probably help, and would be much easier over msn

I forgot to add that MalwareBytes Anti-malware is prevented from installing by some Trojans. So download it and install to verify that you dont have a trojan or two already on your laptop (which could account for random lockups).
You need to be 100% sure that you have a "clean " system to start with.
If you don`t want to do a fresh install try an online scan from somewhere like Trend (Housecall is the software/service name).
Oh and CCleaner removes some of the directories or folders where nasties lurk, I run it and it removes files that take up scan time so it makes sense to install and try that too.
Have fun.

Another good test to see if you've got a trojan is to see if you can get to the microsoft website

I use avast at the mo and it seems to be working fine, If you can get hold of spybot search and destroy as well your comp should be pretty safe.

okay, i stopped paying attention when i saw "Norton antivirus"....
*bites tongue hard*
seriously tho, use another software pack. Norton is crap. atm Avast! is working nicely, free, and isnt a real screw up. and i suggest looking into firewalls if you're really paranoid, alongside some Spybot S&D pack.
