On the Topic of Libya

Since Libya has entered the news I thought it prudent to spark a discussion about the various aspects of why we all think this is. Obviously, the foremost reason is the compassionate release of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi for his alleged involvement in the bombing of PanAm flight 103 which crashed in Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988.

Pinned on the back of this prisoner's release are several "hot topics". We have heard that Gordon Brown is refusing to pursue Libya for compensation for the victims of Lockerbie and we have heard allegations of oil deals being the underlying reason for Al Megrahi's release.

Do we think that Al Megrahi should have been released to return home to die? Without speculating on what may or may not be behind this move, i believe that people should be released from imprisonment on some very strict grounds of compassion. Many of these grounds have not been met or even considered in my eyes. I believe that, considering the extent of his alleged crime, Al Megrahi should be allowed to return to his country to die but that he should be kept under close supervision once he has returned home. If the man still believes in the cause he allegedly commited this attrocity in the name of he is perfectly able to carry on his message despite being critically ill. He should have all his movements closely monitored, he should have very limited liberty and he should, at all times, remain treated in many respects as a deadly criminal. This has not happened. Instead the man has been received in Libya like some celebrity..or worse, like a matyr with a cause. This is not Nelson Mandela we are talking about - this man allegedly masterminded the deaths of 270 civilians. Because of the way this man has been received in his country, i cannot agree with his release.

So how about the oil? Well, i've got hold of something rather interesting just this morning.

What They Didn't Want You To Find Out

I do suggest you read it all but in case you don't-

"In the case of the Stanlow Refinery auction, the workforce could soon found themselves working for the Libyan National Oil Company controlled by the Libyan dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi, the man ultimately responsible for UK terrorist outrages, including the Pan-Am flight 103 bombing. What a prospect." (extract)

It strikes me as sad that people often allow their passions to run away with them to such a degree that logical following of the breadcrumbs becomes nigh impossible. The companies are not angry because the leak could potentially upset the workers, they upset because the leak could potentially OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT!

Of course, it won't. Not unless we very quickly and implicitly all "become french" and start actually making a stink when our government do something disgusting. I can tell you, i'm no fan of French politics but the people? I have to take my hat off to! If this happened in France, or something similar, they'd have every port blocked by sunset and every major highway on the way to be gradually bottlenecked until the matter was resolved.

What do we put up with instead? Ed Balls. What the hell is the Childrens Secretary doing releasing press statements on matters of foreign policy?

Ed Balls, why are we not pursuing Libya (like the Americans succesfully did) for compensation for Lockerbie victims? Also, incidentally, shouldn't you be more concerned with the fascist sentiments being plastered all over our national news from Barnados? GET ON WITH YOUR JOB AND GET ME DAVID MILLIBAND!

So, we get the voice of the shadow secretary. Great. The failed wannabe Conservative prime minister now shadow foreign secretary, William Hague. Who, let's face it, didn't even have the guts to force Gordon "illegal prime minister" Brown to get his fat bloated self a proper election! Of course, old Willy's not happy about the situation at all. Of course. Shadow, being the operative word. Shame we can't get rid of the fascist dictator who's running the show until the next general election when, if we still live in a democracy, we might just get a chance to elect our own leader.

I got to thinking though. A conservative calling for compensation for victims destroyed by a bomb which was manufactured in Libya? Hmm.

We have a saying 'round our way and it goes like this- the kettle calling the pot black. If Margeret Thatcher had done her job we perhaps would not have been discussing any of this! Have a read here-

"My jaw dropped".

Interesting, no?

Aside from that (which you can speculate on) is it not also prudent then for the British people who died in The Conservative Thatcher's Falklands conflict to be seeking compensation from The US for dieing at the hands of ex-United States Military armaments?

Something you likely didn't know about our Stateside Friends.

I have a neatly definitive compassionate compass and i would never say that the victims of Lockerbie do not deserve resolution but, as stated by the campaign leader, it is not about the money. I hear that often where money is concerned. Will an apology do? i would ask.

The seeking of compensation from the people who manufactured a bomb which also happened to kill some people somewhere else in the world is something which (whether you like it or not) can never be allowed to happen. Why? It is a can of worms those in power cannot afford to open.

Over to you, folks :)
