Greased Gerbil's Quote Discussion #1 - Stupid Questions

by ~[ Greased Gerbil ]~
Occasionally, through my many years of study, I learn something profound and see the need to make a memorable quote out of it. I have decided to begin a series of discussions, using only these quotes as starting points. Occasionally, I will be throwing in a profound quote penned by someone else, simply because I believe it warrants exploration.
I must begin with one of my own:
"Your desire to learn can be measured by your willingness to ask stupid questions; a question is only stupid if you learn nothing from it."

I like it, but I'm still too scared to ask 'stupid questions.' Whoops.

reminds me of a chapter in "zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance".
the author explains the way scientific method works, and claims that it is better to state the obvious (rather, ask a question that seems stupid) but well base, then state something elaborate and (seemingly) meaningfull, with no factual base.
the example is of a disfunctional motor cycle, where the first question should be "why doesn't the cycle work", and not "why doesn't the (say) electric system work", as long as you haven't proven the electric system is the cause of the disfunctionality.
read the book (thenread it again...) it's all explained to more details.
BTW, i was thinking along these lines when i wrote my sig. when you comr to think of it, all of mathematics boils down to ten or so obvious axioms.

But it doesn't really make sense...They annul each other. If you ask a stupid question you learn nothing, therefor if you are willing to ask stupid questions, you learn nothing...
