Gmail accounts...

Apparently a lot of people have been asked to provide a mobile phone number to Google, in order that Google can verify their new gmail.com email account...

I took the message that I got from Google, and searched it on the web:
"Before we create your account, we need to send a verification code via SMS to your mobile phone. We sometimes require verification to help protect our users from spam or abuse. "

I'd like to ask how long this has been going on?
I understand it's been quite a while... :P

and yet, I never heard of any outrage or protest, unlike the stuff that Facebook does... :-k

gmail has a useful purpose... facebook doesnt...

(we ourselves use neither... so we think we're close to being neutral there...)

glad to hear you can't be drawn into GMail that easily...

I wish I could agree that facebook is totally un-useful...

Basically, I'm waiting for a change in leadership on Facebook... so many issues there...

As for Google,
I'm concerned about myself or others using one of Google's services for dissident or anti-government purposes,
and having the government demand my information,
and getting my cell phone number from Google.

i've never been asked for anything by google, unlike MSN or yahoo whom suck big floppy donkey no. btw. not that i really remember them asking for anything like that either. but they still suck non the less. MSN has it's uses, but the yahell (yahoo whatever) is a bunch of BS, their messenger is crap, and the ymail is crap, and the rest of their crap is well, crap lmao. (if you can't tell, i rather dislike yahoo)

I like yahoo mail tons better than MSN, but i get your point. :D

from what I can tell, yahoo mail is almost as good as gmail...
though some of the good stuff you have to pay for, like disposeable addresses... $20 per year.

I also like skydrive by MSN, but I can't find anything useful about hotmail...

too much spam, and I haven't even written anyone...
so far, not nearly enough options to customize hotmail...

I think my hotmail got spammed cuz it was in my profile here, and google bots got it... and then the nasty bots got it... :(

Hence why you should always use a reflector email address for public information things ;)

meh, it's okay... it's not the first address with spam, it won't be the last...
and it's better off than my others anyway.

I just wish I saw whatever other people do with hotmail...

too me, yahoo is just so much better.

Before giving away any more personal info to google, read this:

http://motherjones.com/politics/2006/10/google-evil

Its easy to spot the devil with the moustache, breathing fire. But the one who cloaks himself in good deeds is much more difficult to identify. Be wary of google

I just realized I have a gmail account of sorts...

my broadband ISP has a google-powered webmail system...

the emails even say welcome to Gmail... from a Gmail address, of course...

there appear to be at least two versions of the webmail,
but the default version, (the classier one, and the only one I bothered trying), is very buggy indeed...

I think I've got a decent computer...

<-- 3.33 GHz, with the XP Professional, the works... :-D
sorta like a Hummer... power-wise too, I'm sure... :P

it runs circles around every other computer that I have ever used...

it's XP, so I understand it was going to be difficult to shut the browser windows down once I realized I had to...

but how they started to freeze up in the first place I will probably never know...
usually it powers through anything... like, well, a Hummer.
