Haiti Earthquake: Hundreds Feared Dead
Hundreds of people are feared dead after a huge earthquake rocked the Caribbean island of Haiti.
Buildings including hospitals, hotels, the World Bank and the presidential palace were destroyed in the largest quake to hit the area for 200 years.
Aid workers feared hundreds, even thousands, may have been killed in the disaster which measured 7.1 on the Richter scale.
It took just 60 seconds for the quake to destroy large parts of the capital Port-au-Prince, just 10 miles from the epicentre of the tremor.
The quake was described as a "catastrophe" and "a major disaster" by officials as rescue workers tried to reach victims buried in the rubble.

Wow 7.1 is quite large...I'm very sorry for those people!

Then again, Haitian buildings are generally rather unstable by themselves.
When I was on holiday there, I have seen for myself several buildings which were supported by 4 wooden logs, hammered diagonally into the ground at the corners of the building, basically keeping the corners from sagging and the building from collapsing. Maintenance to buildings is a no-no.. once they're built, they're built, and that in itself is a miracle given the rather sizeable amount of unfinished, abandoned projects.
I would comment that an earthquake of 3.0 would have caused similar widespread collapse of buildings. 7.1 is overkill.
I would donate money if that would help, but it is a mentality issue. Change that mentality, then I'd be willing to support you.
Besides, you Haitians probably have enough supporters right now.. nothing better to rally support as an earthquake.
My well-meant condoleances to the families of the dead.

i agree radiance. although i've never been, i know it to be tru

the bad part is, if you think about it aside from the obvious, that a 5 on the richter scale could/would do the same amount of damage and destruction as a 7.1 on lets say the east coast... epic

the death toll is in the 100's of thousands.. ponder that for a moment.
United Nations stated on TV the other night, it was the worse disaster they had ever seen.

That reminds me of the tsunami in eastern Asia, as much losses I think, but difference being this, it's only on the west side of the island (Haïti).
Well, I didn't hear about Dominican Republic's damages and losses at least.

without trying to be tasteless thats a stupid ass comment for the UN to make, there have been several such disasters since the creation of the UN with similar death tolls. This isnt any worse or better than those.
It is still a disaster yeah, and you cant help but feel for those who were killed in it & those who survived only to find their 'world' destroyed. But to say its the worst disaster since the creation of the UN considering how much has happened in the recent past is a bit much.

Well, I might see where they come from..it's the western part of a small island suffering such amount of losses, while tsunami was split inbetween different countries with "bigger" populations. Not that it was "less" worse, but it *might* be what they are about. (I'm not UN member so I don't know why they said so, I just give possibilities)
Which makes me wonder..did the Dominican Republic suffer from damages/losses considering it's in same island?

they are probably taking into account that the place hasnt got anywhere near the infastructure capable to deal with this.
Truly sad, some of the news video's are really saddening. Even saying that feels condescending.

Sometimes I wonder what would happen if we helped people like this before a disaster killed a lot of them.

That would not be half as guilt-satisfying as sending money after a thing like this happens.
How could we deserve redemption if we're not able to support victims?! We need victims.
