are speed cameras on our roads as a way for council s to make money?

i belive so as they are inafective at slowing traffic down because once youve passed the 10 or so meters they cover you instantly speed up and they are placed in positions were speed limits are to low

the speed cameras only job is to geberate revenue...nothing more and nothing less!

otherwise they would have put them were they could do the most good, outside schools and residential areas, not motorways and A roads.

agreed.

statistics show that most incidents occur due to drivers distractions not speed itself.

they want to cut speed limit to 20 mph in residential ares and have already done so in many areas.

in my view if schools were to open an hour later then they do now it would ease traffic congestion as people can get to work for 9 am and then less cars on the road to avoid incidents and congestion.

you cant have politicians doing and suggesting stuff like that! that would first require us to have politicians with an ounce of common sense, a brain that works and also require said politicians to actually want to do some good! :?

what are you?! some kind of revolutionary?!?! stop trying to destabilise our entire political system by introducing common sense!

/sarcasm

seriously, that's a great idea, shame what the people want or consider a good thing is never seen as such by the PTB (powers that be).

Germany invented autoroutes and they had the common sense of not having speed limits.

A few variables to consider:

Cons:
- Higher speeds require a shorter moment of inattention to result in an accident.

Pros:
- In the case of an accident, death is more likely to result, as opposed to a lifetime handicap that causes one to wonder why they should bother breathing.

As for the ineffectiveness of cameras...

I'd have to disagree. They are very effective at making people feel that they are being watched. That's the whole point. Clearly.

At least, it's why I'd use them. I would love to watch my citizens in my spare time. It's like going to the zoo, but I get paid for it instead of the other way around. :D

Point: Don't Speed, Don't Pay the fine.
Don't Break the law, and don't get arrested.

Speed cameras is a revenue source, no doubt, however, it is also for public safety to ensure people who do not obey the road rules get punished.

You can say the same thing for testing if you over the alcohol limit.

All speed cameras ahould be removed from the sides of our roads. They are placed only to make money and nothing more. Even those avg speed cameras should be removed as instead of watching the road they encourage you to watch your speedo.

Not to mention if they are such a great safety device as advertised by various govs, why have several cameras been placed on brand new roads before the roads were even opened. Are we designing roads with accident blackspots now?

Despicable devices & utterly destestable the way they are used to track & monitor all journeys

the problem with speed cameras is that they only slow people down were there are white lines on the road then they speed back up which is a very inafective way of dealing with speaders.

The best way to slow people down is to get more police on the roade as even spotting a police car on the road makes you slow down to what speed you should be doing and also police can pick out drunk/drug drivers and poorly maintained cars

They exist to generate revenue, admittedly.. but revenue does need to be generated from somewhere. If we insist on having all the benefits of a welfare state, with such a high amount of our GDP going back into public services and handouts, then it needs to be accomodated somehow. The existence of such petty means of gathering cash is sympton of a far wider problem.

Another problem is the attitude of everyone here. Sure they generate revenue and slow cars and make drivers aware that they could recieve a punishment. I don't think there was ever a primary reason.

you might think, well they would only introduce speed camera's if they make some money back from it. that also may be true but do you really know?

the point is they serve 2 purposes, and therefore prove to be far more efficient than if they were entirely for 1 purpose. It is thinking logically. The people in power think, well how are we going to make this work efficiently.

Because until the cameras were given a chance to be self financing there was less than 2% of cameras on all of britains roads. Since rule/law changes were made to make the cameras self financing the UK has seen a growth in camera numbers to the tune of over 200% on previous numbers.

Ergo, they are only and solely a source of revenue.

Also the money doesnt go to government Mordack, it goes into the local police authorities pockets. So it doesnt pay for social benefits or the NHS etc etc.

also got to love the 'newer' on the spot fines...how on earth do you know where that goes? they march people to the cash point to draw money out, then they disappear.

I think I just got robbed by the police
