The ill fated STI vs Bebita thread , And watching Rocky, got me onto something....

Legends Vs Players of the current day, Pound for Pound, Who'd win?

EtL Vs Jedi Tank?
EtL's smoothness, Vs JTs rugged roughness.

Esker Vs Qacol?
Cool as a cucumber Qacol vs the Irresistable esker would be sgws equivilent to porn. The forum thread would be the funniest , most put down ridden thing youd ever seen. Ingame i'd probally give the edge to qacol , Ive faught both of these and itd be epic.

Replijake Vs Tekki?
Smart mouthed, Quick thinking, Big ingamers.

Disscuss the awesome that would ensue! And dont limit yourselves to my 3 examples... Make your own.

Well maybe the outcome of your examples would be in favour of "new" players, however the sheer awesomeness of old skool players would prevail the awesomeness of money imho. Hats down, on exactly same terms with exactly same conditions old skool would win, simply because there was skill involved in making their accounts what they are and in a long run they'd use their resources more carefully and would think twice about massing small, token, defenses due to limited resources they were used to have.

All in all my bets would be on old skool dogs because you were required to have a lot more skill to succeed back then than it is required from you to succeed now, so if they succeeded with pure elegance back then, imagine what would they do now, provided there were same conditions and terms for everyone involved.

Wolf359 vs Severian (War of words)

I recon that one would make an interesting thread to read.

Could not agree with you more, Respect for the current big players aside. U know i joke about old school being cool, But it really is, I will have a go at anyone or anything, but back in the day Someone like Jake was twice or threetimes the player i am. Pound for pound, I cant think of anyone who could have him off.

Yeah exactly :)
Although we do have to confess that server wars had a great influence on things the way they are today, simply because many of such great players had no real opponents back then.. For instance they could easily do whatever they pleased to do and noone dared to stand up to them. This only created the atmosphere around them, already fulfilled with fear and mystery, to be even bigger so they were left alone and could build up their accounts some more. After the first server war people saw that the atmosphere around them is nothing but a bubble, true, made by awesomeness of their game-play and great mind tricks perhaps, but still a bubble which can pop anytime.

So while they were a lot better than most of players back then it is true that had they not been left alone as much as they were, they couldn't be so much better (ingame-wise) than other players. But then again what made them to be left alone was exactly their game-play and quickness to adapt to new situations.

Still they were great, a lot greater than most of the other players, to have been even enabled such a game-play (I'm talking about pre-alliance and early alliance-forging era now)..
They were adaptive (like I said above, they quickly forged their new game-play after alliances came out and maintained that game-play, while sacrificing some stuff every now and then for people to see that they're still a force to be reckoned with) enough to adapt to almost any situation.

I guess server wars killed them at the end, as it meant end of their game-play because when server wars occurred it wasn't a game of skill as much as a game of 'who can be online more' or a game of 'who can spend the most money' in which every monkey could become a "pro"..

Oh, the memories..

Im going to have to argue with you, for the first time in sgws history, Neim!

The reason the old school players who still get talked about are because they were one of two schools.

Badass

Funkyass.

I was the latter, though not awesome...

You had your Jakes and eskers in the bad asses, and your ghostygoos, Saz's, Optical loves etc, in the funkys. That was the day, Actual villians and heros.

Problem now is its so generic. Anyone can stand up to anyone. With almost no losses.

Wow I feel..go down boy!

I agree that they were real badasses and funkyasses, but I do believe that their game-play enabled them to be even bigger badasses and funkyasses as they'd normally be. Because they created an atmosphere of fear they could do anything without fear of retribution which meant they could do all that crazy stuff they did :P
Esker excluded though, he was a special case

JaseB vs. JT (two good warrior players)
Wolf359 vs. Severian (awesome propaganda threads)
JUAN vs. Qacol (need I say more?)

It would be pretty awesome to see a match-up of say:

ETL, STI, Jake, Reborn, Lego, JUAN, Apophis, Unknown, Elusive, Esker, Jase B, Wolf, Corkscrew

vs.

JT, Qacol, Bebita, Tekki, Robe, Ceasar, Deni, Robert, Orpheus, Rodwolf,

In the current game mechanics, the new pretenders would probably beat down the old guard. With the 05/06 settings, I think the old boys would definitely have had the edge in plotting, scheming and planning.

But the area where the old guard would win hands down is the community's impression of the war.....ETL, Wolf, STI, JUAN, Esker and co had an aura of invincibility about them - they were certainly the masters of propaganda....
