Do NOT activate an account from the e-mail address of kristina@atvclub.msk.ru also turn off all rules for self activation to guest status

This account was responsible for posting inappropriate pictures of young children on our spam sections. Hopefully I have it all cleared up, but was a bit shocking with the morning cup of coffee

I'll leave this here for a while; that kind of spam bot should know better than to spoil anyone's morning cup of coffee.

Recently we have been getting so many spam bots on our (SU) forums that we even offered them a place in our alliance and that we'll make a special section on our forums just for them
Too bad they're just a script mostly and don't understand the word we say

intelligent design on anti-bot measures usually prevents 99% of spambots from registering...

following guides from pages on the web in design blindly will often not work 100%, as those making the bots also follow those...

never put forum setting to self activation. make it admin approved and then put them in a group with no permissions until proper identification is found

if it is spam bot then catch its IP and post it here to add to the perma banned list to prevent more from said location......

this happens on so many forums its horribly bad. make sure the annoying captcha text is on, make sure someone sends an ingame message on registering, and make sure bots arent aloud on the forum, phpbb forums have a setting for that usually, and make sure accounts are admin approved.

You don't need to go to all that trouble, just disable the option for registered members that are not in any groups you usually add them (for security clearances on alliance forums) to upload pictures. That will solve all of your problems, they'll just write links to their pages.
After that it's all up to the stupidity of members registered on that forum, if they are stupid enough to open the page from someone that is clearly a bot they deserve a lesson so they won't do it again.

Problem is, bots invade forums with tons of threads to be removed, not to mention bots register everyday and need to be cleaned. I've seen SLA forums with over 10 pages of bots registering each day. That's why enhanced control on appliers is required I think.

Depends, enabling CAPTCHA code which is a must for registration then, prevents a lot of spam bots from registering, making CAPTCHA code less readable even more-so, but it is annoying for people that want to register. If you make more fields and make some of them obligatory you decrease the possibility of spam bots registering even further.
Although yes sometimes it is easier to just make it so that you have to accept every member by yourself, but that depends on how many people register daily and how many bots register daily on your forums if it's worthwhile..
