is this sort of fundamentalism morally ok?
is it expected that people should stand by and let this be spread this message to the world?
should people stand up and say something about this, or as part of the "free world" are we supposed to stand idly by and watch?

The freedom that brought you Harry Potter, now brings you his mor(t)al enemies.
It's nothing new.. same thing happened with LotR. Evil. Paradise Lost. Blasphemous. Faust. Devil-glorification.

It's nothing new, and so, as a logical consequence, us in the 'Free World' already know of these sentiments. They are irrelevant. We still have LotR. We still have Paradise Lost, we still have Faust. We'll still have fairy tales like Harry Potter in 200 years, I guess. But if those books are listed along with the aforementioned three, then that will say something of decaying literary standards.



In other words: Name me something, and I'll show you it is the root of all evil due to my fanatical beliefs. It's a big waste of time -to even listen to fanatics attacking anything-, better spent reading more.

I do so love how such people get all worked up over things like Harry Potter but those very same people have no trouble believing the mythological characters like Merlin etc were good guys.

Merlin was a **Filtered** hero of Britain, even if he slaughtered hundreds and committed to ritual sacrifice, depending on the reading. Harry Potter? Not so much..

You're right though. It's .. odd. However, generally when one says "wizards are bad", that includes people like Merlin..

OK lets sidetrack back to the topic. I THINK ( do you see what i just did? ) Harry Potter is bad because it offers more than just light reading to kids but an intro to the world of magic and somewhat invites them to do all the things in the book. Its for kids, i don't think we need to see all that blood and evil characters and specifics in " how to " on the looks of magic and such. And of course its supposed to be a tale. With a moral behind it.

Here's a story with a moral. To illustrate a point.


Once upon a time, Billy, Michael, Luke and Phyllis lived in the same house. Billy was a brilliant nerd, 25 years old, Michael a powerful ex-soldier, 29, Luke was a doctor, 27, and Phyllis was an exceptionally beautiful woman, 28. They lived there happily as friends, went out together, went shopping, played cards. They did what friends do, and all was well.
Billy decided to rape Phyllis, once upon a day when everyone else was away. And so he did. The friendship of four was screwed up forever.
End of story.

Moral: Don't live with 3 men and 1 woman in the same house.


A fairytale doesn't have to be positive and friendly to carry a moral, and once someone is assured there is no moral in something, they won't see it. Same thing with the Bible. There are a lot of MAJORLY screwed up stories in there, but no one contests that various morals can be read into them. Same thing with Gilgamesh. Hell, same thing goes for almost ANY book since the invention of writing.



I know your argument, Ashu. I know you would love to say humanity would have no morals if not for God who provides them. But that is too easy, and you know it. I'm guessing that's why you didn't say it yet.

i've been debating with myself whether to post in this threads or not, and now there's been a few responses and after reading those responses i decided i did have something to say after all...


i see KF's and Julietes responses are more directed at the OP than what he had to say or the video link the OP posted.

did anyone watch the film? how about some response to whats in the film?

who are these books aimed at, doesn't anyone think its wrong??

much like my topic about the evil of Disney, people saw nothing wrong with Disney flashing breasts and the word S E X subliminally across the screen in films directed at mainly kids, and instead chose to either attack me or accuse me of being OTT.

its not right to accuse someone of having double standards when no such thing happened...if the OP had stated that Harry Potter was evil and that Merlin was good (regardless if this is the case or not) then you can accuse the OP of having double standards.

how about we keep the replys confined to what's said in the OP instead of making comments about things not said, IE Merlin and the bible.

"This sort of fundamentalism" is the fundamentalism displayed in the film, i.e. of the people who deem Harry Potter 'evil'.

Actually KMA I did indeed watch the linked youtube video & my response was based upon that very vid.

You see Christianity which seems to be the religion the video makers are concerned with protecting includes some very dark things indeed. In fact some of it was taken from pagan worship & so called witchcraft. So to accuse anyone else of witchcraft is in itself a double standard.

Its typical bible bashing for the hell of it. Pick on something popular and make a mountain out of nothing. There is no evil meaning in Harry Potter except what people such as those who made the video put into it.

i ignore/d the religious aspect of such films and only look at what is being said.

Just a question, how is Harry Potter different from the Twilight Saga?

Harry potter is a dark book and children shouldn't read it. It is like most other fairytale.
Take for example, Charlie and the chocolate factory, or Alice in wonderland...
they are disguised as children books when clearly they arn't.

Harry Potter does encourage the practice of dark practices and makes it innocent.

All morals are subjective, even in Christianity, so there cannot be a definite answer yes or no.

This is a free world, they can speak, we can watch, but it is always up to use what we believe.

On the other hand, to a normal person, the book and movie, would translate to be a story, thats about it. Yes, we may recognise there are occultism in there, but in the end of the day, if we decide not to interact with occultism/partake and become a undying out of control fan of it and act upon it. I think it is okay.

Just take superman for example... and ppl thinking they are superman and jumping off buildings because they can fly.

Difference being HP actively tries to involve the children.

I wonder what they would say about LOTR and Narnia.

We cannot and should not cater to the idiocy of absolute morons who believe a **Filtered** book is real.
Maybe they're better off jumping off bridges believing they are immortal. Maybe ignorance is bliss.
I know I won't pay their medical bills, so they better do their hero-imitating properly, or properly wrong.
