This really pisses me off. And they state that the site was set up as a base partly to protect it... Riiiiiiiight. That worked out great, didn't it?! ](*,)

It seems some homies decided to sign on the fact that they're protecting this site and key-ed their names on it... No harm right? ](*,)

what right does any invading army have to take over ANY world heritage site?

i thought we were supposed to be "civilised" and yet, they have acted just like an ancient conquering army, sacking towns, city's and whole country's, looting and butchering everyone. 1.6 million dead Iraq's since the start of the war (and who knows how many have been subjected to torture?!) and now they damage ancient sites...no damned respect!

I think its hillarious given the entire PR campaign that went on against the taliban and their barbaric destruction of the Buddhas of Bamyanes.

hilarious? i see nothing funny about destroying world heritage sites mate!

the fact that they engaged in such a huge PR campaign is ironic and downright hypothetical (irony and hypocrisy being the words i think you was looking for?), but not funny.

@nooneinparticular:

there are also unconfirmed reports that some of the ancient cuneiform tablets and seals have been popping up on ebay...

as i said, that's unconfirmed.

Sad indeed.. old news too.
Regardless, it is a bad thing.
It's what you get for most of humanity consisting of ignorant pigs. Pigs don't know history.

You should read more! :P It was all over the news here last year. Before then, a few mentions were made of rampant corruption and other stuff caused by American incompetence to impose a new kind of government on a nation..
[KMA]Avenger wrote:its defo an act of criminality but, could this be classed as a war crime?
Criminal, I would agree..
War crime? Not really. Or we would have to class a tank breaking the rail on the highway as a war crime as well? After all, in 5k years, those rails will be monuments to our society.. ;)

I do agree that some better care could've been had with the placement of Babylon Base.. but as with all things, the military planners probably thought that building on top of a city that, once rebuilt, would rule the world.. is a good thing. A victory against the **Filtered** of Babylon, so to speak.
How very Apocalyptic. How very typical that would be.

Looters and pillagers have been a pain to historical research since the Egyptian Pharaohs.
Sadly, wars tend to attract them back to biz. :(

If despoiling some dusty old relic to build a base saves a single life, or even prevents a single injury to a US or UK soldier then its worth while.

#-o

Good example of someone who doesn't understand value of historical monuments.

Humans live how long? 70? 85? 115 years at most?
A monument however is a remaining of an older period, when it's gone, it's gone, we can witness a long gone past thanks to those. It can last millenia, and has much more importance in the absolute of global history than a single human life. Not to mention that if those monuments are damaged, it's like I said because GWB Junior wanted to finish dad's job along with some deep dislike based on former leader.

Well, it's quite hard to explain it to people who don't understand value of monuments and qualify them as "dusty old relic".

Ignorance is among us, and it's not meant to disappear before a long long time. :(
