a hypothetical question...or 2.

what if the ancient accounts of "Gods" (aliens) having visiting this planet, creating us, and giving us our knowledge turn out to be true? what would this mean to our society? what would this mean to all the differing religions of the world? is there room for both Aliens and God?
i don't want to argue if the ancient accounts are real or not or which right and which is wrong, i only want to discuss the ramifications from a societal and religious aspect.

nothing what so ever.
religious nut jobs will keep on being religious nut jobs.
alien frak jobs will keep on bring alien freak jobs.
cynical scientific bastards will keep on being cynical scientific bastards.
some may switch sides, but on the grand scheme of things, no spiritual revolution (nor revalation, BTW) there.

It might mean something to people personally, but it will have no real effect on the state of the world.
Other than perhaps our search for extra-terrestrial life becomes more focused..

i think it would be pretty cool.
but i suppose it depends how we find out.
if we found out because they came back...i dont think it would go well.
the general public would panic i think
if we found out by some scientific means....i think their would be less hysteria

I thought i answered this question already.
no change, not in the aspects you're discussing.

I think you will find on both scientific and religious fronts that BOTH consent to the fact "life" may exist elsewhere. So religiously there will be little change. What ever religous group following what ever God will just claim that their God created them (the aliens) as well.

Your thought experiment has to be more specific,
How did we find out it's true?
When did this happen?
Where did this happen?
LEt's say a giant alien ship visited the united states and broadcast a message giving unshkable proof of what your saying.
I'm pretty sure it would change a boat load.
You would have historians rewritting history.
All kinds of new churches
millions leaving their faith at once.
Probably a few riots
And a million other changes and new ideas I couldn't try to predict.
Human nature may not change, but society sure would.

Remembering X-Files' "try" at this, I wish I will be dead already the day that would happen, if it was to happen lol.

And also, let's remember about the Oris & Goa'ulds in stargate..not really something nice, isn't it?
Just the troubles it would create for us to learn would already not be worth to live (literally chaos) thus my hope it happens after I'm gone.

I agree with this to a point, in some encounters there are bound to be hostilities but in the other side I'd like to see the surge of technological advances.. Not to mention space travel would be an amazing event, and the ability to study other races in an entirety. Think about the advances in just raw materials, the advanced metals and plant life. Plus they may be able to unlock secrets into our past that even we don't know. Like the chicken and the egg story

all of the underlined rests on the assumption that our society doesn't collapse into anarchy, or even worse, society doesn't fracture into camps of opposing views and wants. we may end up with 2 opposing camps, camp 1 openly abandoning all religious faith and embracing the aliens. camp 2, those unwilling to believe their eyes and accept what we have been taught MAY be incorrect.
personally, i would be in the middle somewhere.
