How would you react if such a hole opened up under your parents' house?

Indeed. I'm sure it would be a rather weird thing to see with your own eyes. :)
I think I'd panic, due to the hole being so unexpectedly deep.

And I'd ask how such a hole could come into being. "ruptured sewer pipe"? Only if there was a pre-existing sinkhole. And then I'd scold my parents for going to live on top of a sinkhole.. :? That's like moving in the swamp and complaining about mosquitoes. *grin*

It reminds me of the laser hit in Antarctica in Alien vs Predator if anyone saw this movie...is it a fake?

A massive sinkhole has opened up in Guatemala City, reportedly swallowing a couple of buildings as tropical storm Agatha tore through the region.

The storm dumped more than 3ft (1m) of rain on parts of Guatemala, the government said, causing rivers to burst their banks and hillsides to collapse.

Officials initially said the storm was to blame, but now say they will carry out further studies to determine the exact cause, as a sinkhole appeared in the same area in 2007.

You'll have to admit that is one big hole.. :|

Hm, are these sinkholes part of the Upper Yucatan sinkholes? One of our forum residents went diving there, as I recall. :D
