Synthetic life created aka . It's alive!!! ALIVE!!!

Scientists in the United States have announced they have developed the world's first synthetic living cell.

Led by Dr Craig Venter, the Maryland-based research team says it is the first time synthetic DNA has been in complete control of a cell.

Dr Venter says the first self-replicating synthetic bacterial cell could unlock countless possibilities to produce new fuels or vaccines.

"Wouldn't it be nice to have something that actually blocked common colds or more importantly HIV, where the virus evolves so quickly the vaccines that are made today can't keep up with those evolutionary changes," he said.

The creation of the synthetic cell began on a computer. Dr Venter says his team assembled it and transplanted it into a recipient cell and converted that to a new species.

"We built the DNA chromosome from scratch from four bottles of chemicals, chromosomes over 1 million letters long. We did the final assembly in yeast that people are familiar with [from] making beer and bread," he said.

Dr Venter says the new bacteria replicated over 1 billion times and researchers say the cells cannot survive independently.

Maryland biophysicist Dr David Thirumalai says it could be used to create synthetic cells to heal particular parts of the body or to create synthetics bugs to clean up an oil spill.

"Let's use it in an oil spill for example. You could create synthetic bugs that will just consume this oil at a rapid rate."

Dr Venter's institute is already talking to pharmaceutical companies about designing new vaccines, but ethicists and critics of genetic engineering warn the risks are unparalleled.

The researchers acknowledge the technology could be used by bioterrorists to make dangerous new pathogens.

Dr Thirumalai says it is impossible to predict all the consequences but he is also in awe of what the Venter team has achieved.

"It is a marriage of minds, imagination and God's creation of life itself," he said.

Dr Venter says this was only a proof-of-concept cell; the next stage is to create synthetic algae.

And he is not shying away from the philosophical debates this also unlocks.

His research team inserted watermarks in the synthetic DNA to be decoded, including a James Joyce quotation: "To live, to err, to fall, to triumph, to recreate life out of life."

This technology has a long way to go but this is a great breakthough. The potential pay offs are HUGE!!

- organisms designed specifically to grow replacement tissues for surgery

- organisms designed to target specific areas of the body for drug delivery

- organisms designed to eat cow poo and excrete GOLD!!!

This research will lead to many scientific breakthroughs and have social and ethical implication for all of soceity. We can discuss them here but any Conspiracy nut job crap will be delt with severly(you know who you are)

i was imprresessed when i heard this on the news today the implacations of this break through are posably more importannt than the invention of the wheel

a light at the end of the tunnle of terminal illnesses

It's all based on the bio samples recovered from Roswell

It's actually very impressive, potential for single purpose organisms for medical use and bio-processors for a new generation of computers in the future, but they have a long long way to go before making anything even remotely useful and you can bet the military are already looking into bio-weapon applications.

We already have perfectly good deadly organisms that can be manipulated a million different ways to suit the military. I can't see how this would help accept make their budget go up.

But its not really true artificial life though at least according to the reporting of it. We didnt suddenly make something totally new, we needed something to exist & be alive first to exploit to create this 'new life'.

True.... that's why i put in the frakenstein quote in the title.

But do you want to elaborate on the exploit comment?

The exploit comment wasnt an attack on the work, I believe its good wrok that will lead to many useful treatments hopefully and maybe cure some of the things that currently are considered 'incurable'

I simply meant that the 'created' life needed something already naturally alive to continue its existence. Hence exploit as in a host/parasite relationship until it has taken the host over with its own dna (or whatever it uses to take control of the cell)

Again I've only read about 2/3 reports on this and a lot of the details just arent there (typical journalism) so all this is based on what I'm lead to believe from the reports issued so far.

Okay , I can see what your getting at. Bassically what they did was synthetically replicated the DNA of the orginal cell and swapped out it's original DNA blueprint. (Kind of like a brain transplant). The new cells still have the same function as before just with a new engine we made under the hood.

Now this is a really simplistic comparison(Don't take it litterally guys, nucleoid/= brain)

It's a huge step forward, might even make stem cell research redundant. I see how exploit fits in this context, but it has such a negative conotation. For context though, alot of applied science could be described as exploitation.

read about that....but still :-"

every coin has two sides

people have the potential to create new things to help mankind, on the other hand there is always someone that wants to abuse breakthroughs like this for his own benefit...

I can`t even imagine what kind a deadly viruses could be developed thanks to this method....
It would be a lot better if they`d kept this as a secret and proceed further with the project to find any flaws and to actually help mankind then to shout to the whole world:
" hey look!!! I`m actually superman, my secret identity was worthless so I decided to come out with the truth" #-o

if one has it, the other wants it to....the only way how to prevent the potential abuse of such technology is to keep it a secret ( and please don`t tell me that there isn`t anyone that would to abuse such technology) [-(

this could benefit mankind in many ways but I hate to imagine the downside of this project

So basically it's bad because you're a panzy?

Nitro that is like saying that the wheel is bad because people put it on the chariot and used it to kill people, the research itself is harmless, and more importantly the potential medicinal benefits are incredible and in my mind totally outweigh any backlash through misuse. People are going to abuse any breakthrough like this, no matter what measures you take to prevent it, it is just the way people are. You can either accept that and just hope that it is in the hands of the correct people for now, people who aren't going to turn it into a new form of ultra-deadly bio-weapons.

Well well, who would have thought it...

The creator of life *did* turn out to be an elderly white man with a white beard...

built from a digital code in a computer, transplanted into a recipient cell....the first species on the planet whose parent is a computer.....

Hmm...so we can create life now  albeit a very simple life form...yet life indeed. Begs the question, if we can create life....has it happened before?

Old news. There's nothing new.. all has been done before.

We should design something infinitely more advanced as we are.. something so superior, we can barely imagine it.
That is our 'purpose', if we have one at all. All must give way to progress, and the weak will perish before the strong.
