You do realise this will only affect servers / backbones / DNS servers etc etc et all ad infinitum inside the borders of the US??

And you do realise there is plenty of all that, that resides outside of the US borders & that by default your connection should attempt to seek these out if they cant find an US stuff they might be using?

Contrary to popular opinion it would impossible to do what this bill is proposing on a global scale, you don not need the root DNS server for the internet to work, ok it'll make things harder but it wont kill it, besides theres at least 2 root DNS servers that exist outside the US borders so it'll still function pretty decently.

Really its all glass half full & doom & gloom mongering.

Still, Kit, the intention seems to be rather invasive.

Is a good argument for simply not conencting all networks to the internet willy-nilly as a lot of people seem to do. Even corporate behemoths who should know better (i'm look at you IBM/HP/Microsoft) do this still, hell the US military still uses default logins & passwords as exposed by Mckinnon.

If ever there was a good argument for reducing the amount of stuff on the 'net that is it.

i don't mean to be a fear monger about this kind of thing but still, you should understand that the way "they" work is to give you the thin end of the wedge so when the rear end (rear end=the fatter end...obviously) comes full in you might moan but will in the end-swallow it whole. incrementalism anyone?

Sorry KMA but your at least 20 years too late, I assume you've heard of the Great Firewall of China or the UK Internet Watch Foundation or the plans by the Aussie Gov to do their own Great Firewall etc etc I could go on but I'm hoping you've got the point by now.

Gov interference on the 'net already exists as does monitoring etc etc.

Too late now to stop or curtail it, if your that bothered by it then make your own unique 'net or start a darknet or something.

yes i've heard of all that but thats not enough for these guys...heard of Internet 2?

Darknets are awesome.

Anyway. We should learn from our imagination.. what if an AI takes over the internet? It'll have the whole world on its knees in no time.
