I'd not unlock the door, not because I am selfish but simply due to the fact that it would never occur to me to bother. He has a key, he can let himself in

Well I've noticed the occasional 'joke' thrown into dramatic movies as a kind of comic relief, relieve the tension and what not.

Although it could be mixed in with the guy that's been hurt before and doesn't wanna trust again (pronounced: emo) but who knows.

Either way it's bad advice as Mordack pointed out we live in an age of central locking

Well this movie is from early 70's (movie is 16 years old but story takes place in 70's) so indeed central locking wasn't really a problem back then..

HOWEVER central locking sometimes doesn't work properly (I know about that) so then...
