Ok we have 4 servers running different types of SGWs games
1. Main SGWs
2. Quatum SGWs
3. Choas SGWs
4. Ascension Server
yes yes i no there are other games but lets just focus on SGWs.
I was thinking of keeping the same URL for all 4 of these servers but when u hit the homepage there should be 4 distant Log ins and each Login can specify which server it goes to like this. Also that each login can have there own signature posted above the logins/passowrd part.
Main SGWs
Username:
Password:
Quantum SGWs
Username:
Password:
Chaos SGWs
Username:
Password:
Ascension Server

what do u guys think?

Not... really...
The way that php works, is you get an html form
And you give it an "action," which specifies the page to send any information to.
As well as a method.
Code: Select all
<form action=mypage.php method=POST>
which can also be GET. the GET method sends data through links, such as this link I'm at right now...
https://talk.gatewa.rs/posting. ... e&p=212929Look at the last part:
mode=quote&p=212929.
Mode and
P are both data variables that were sent by the "quote" button I clicked on. To store data in a form for submition, you do the following:
Code: Select all
<form action=mypage.php method=GET>
<input type=(something) value="thisismypage" name=mypage>
When submitted, this would send me to mypage.php?mypage=thisismypage, at which point mypage.php would apply any code to any sent variables to do whatever. If I did it with the POST method, the same data would be sent through other means.
How did I submit it, you ask? Another input...
Code: Select all
<form action=mypage.php method=GET>
<input type=(something) value="thisismypage" name=mypage>
<input type=submit value="whatdoyouwanttocallme">
</form>
The value of a submit button is not submitted, but instead determines what the button is labeled. For instance, I could have chosen "attack" "spy" or even "log in" (the </form>; part signifies the end of the information sent. Pages can contain multiple forms, all with different information)
Now, I might be wrong, but all the admin would have to do is copy and paste the login boxes code and simply change the form's "action" to, say,
http://quantumgate.stargatewars.com/login.php (if that is really the page... I didn't check).
Like I said, I might be wrong, but there are still simple ways of solving that. A few redirecting pages would solve the whole thing.
Next time you comment on what is "easy" or "hard" to code, just remember that adding buttons is
not hard. Its making the code behind the buttons that can be hard. Even then, only sometimes... I wouldn't comment on this kind of thing as if you know it when you don't. (NOT meant as a flame.... Don't take it that way.)

Well, there's no doubt that'd be sweet, but the complex part is, like I said, the code on the pages you submit info to.
Even then, I guess it isn't that hard to learn. But just because that part is easy doesn't mean it is as easy to code things like, say, coming up with battle formulas from scratch, and... this is the best part.
Every single page you see that ends in .php was seperately coded. That's right. To make a forum, browser based game, search engine, whatever, you need to seperately code each seperate page, each one usually coming up with 3-5 errors you have to troubleshoot (depends on the coder, obviously).
And, you have to make seperate pages for things like the text box where you type in your reply, and a page that actually creates the reply in a database. Same with pages to edit a reply. Or delete a reply. Or move a thread, whatever.
When I made a site for my alliance, we had 45 pages... On gatewars, I'm guessing he has 250 some.
So, I could help, I guess, if he ever gets to know me... But I'm not that great at php. Several times I've emailed him with questions. Er... make that once that was about php as opposed to gatewars itself.
Well, yeah. I could probably help out with troubleshooting chaos if I was asked, but as for something like makinng it from scratch or coding the new possible "additions" wouldn't be the most fun or easy job in the world. Especially that long fleet idea. DAMN. I mean... DAMN!
Er yeah. So, if Admin reads this and happens to miraculously trust me, I would be fine with helping to debug, but I would decline further offers (most likely).

personaly i like the idea, it does get a lil annoying goin thru various links or to dif addresses, but this would make life that lil more convieniant for all concerned(prehaps admin excluded lol)

would it reduce bandwith if this idea was implmented and would it save in system resouces?

I take it you're asking me (lol)?
I actually don't know much server stuff... only php/mysql stuff. And a little javascript, but nobody cares about javascript.
If by bandwidth you mean how many people load pages, I'd say... no or hardly. As soon as you click on the "submit" button you are taken to a different page... You would still have to go back to whatever page in a new window, tab, or once you finish playing on one server and load the page. You might as well have loaded the quantum page, and signed in there.
But then again, alot of factors come in...
1. What if your home page is the main page on the main server, but you want to log on quantum? You load the Main page anyway, and then you load the Quantum page to log in. That's another page-load than if they were all on the home pages of all servers. No?
2. When you log out it brings you to the main page. Instead of loading the X server page before log in, why not just use the page they load onyour screen anyway?
3. It will create more uneven bandwidth usage, which might as well just be extra bandwidth usage.
4. My whole idea of bandwidth is all wrong and you should cap me in the face where I stand.
As for "system resources" I'm clueless.

hmmm ur just as clueless as me!
but ya its not a bad idea

Yeah, I think its a great, easy addition. Not to mention admin can use it to organize the... somewhat... chaotic... index.php
Example:
Main Server: No Resets, No Mulites, Many Enhancements. Path to Ascension Server.
Username: [ ] Email: [ ] Pasword: [ ] [LOGIN]
Ascension Server: Admin hasn't written any kind of summary yet...
Username: [ ] Email: [ ] Pasword: [ ] [LOGIN]
Quantum Wars! 3 Month Resets, Quicker Play. A totally new Reality!
Username: [ ] Email: [ ] Pasword: [ ] [LOGIN]
Chaos Wars! Annual Resets, Less Rules, Simpler Play. It is Chaos in here!
Username: [ ] Email: [ ] Pasword: [ ] [LOGIN]
Not really a quote, I just liked the idea of a box for my example.
Anyway, its much better than the current mess of links we all know.
Err... yeah. I like it.
(Damn, I need to learn to write a short post for once!)

A central home/login page is a fine idea!

Well, this seems like it'd fit well with an idea I've been tossing around for a while: complete integration of the forums, Quantum, Chaos, and Main.
In a nutshell, you make a GateWars account. This allows you to post on the forum, and you can create a Quantum, Main, or Chaos account and link them together.
In effect, Forum could use BBS code to revamp the in-game PM system.
Beyond that, there's not too much more this'll do, but I thought it'd be a cool idea.
