Im kinda with you Tetris on that one.

Split down the middle.

In some regards, some secrets should stay so. Others, need to be shared.

I think Jules Assange should have found a better way to do it than the way he has. he has endangered innocent peoples lives and that is not right, regardless of what truths he is trying to expose.

From what i have read so far, it all seems to be 'poo' stirring between countries, alot of internal correspondance between embassies. Is that important to you or me? I dont think so. Alot of the cables released so far, i feel like i could have happily not known them ya know?

Whereas the Helicopter killing innocents, and those soldiers being so gung-ho. i think that was disgusting, and events like that should be brought to light, and the men be help accountable. But also, they need to come to light to ensure processes are put into place to stop that happening again.

I think generally, the USA have good intentions, and probably do have alot to hide...But in this day and age...who doesnt?

So yea...Split down the middle :smt025

Wikileaks should work harder, there is a lot more stuff hidden 8)

Without initiatives like that, the world grows even more ignorant every day.

I too, am split...

In addition to the reasons stated above,

I'm not convinced that the recent US gov leaks are that much help,

or that much harm...

though I did see a story that major news media outlets were working with Wikileaks to advise them on what was best to keep hidden...

so the New York Times, plus 4 others, are attempting to mitigate the negatives...

although I'm sure some will view them as collaborators,
I'm not interested in that until I see real proof. :-)

And I do expect that this will land in the debate room by the time I return... despite the generally split agreement, and the generally agreeable tone of the topic... 8-[

There's a lot of info about my country in their reports as well.

I'am split in this matter - and must concur with Tetris on this subject.

I'm looking forward to finding out more in the next weeks.

There are certain things which need to be exposed: civilian deaths in conflicts which are dismissed as collateral damage, or hidden from eyes outside the military. Everyone should be accountable for their actions - and leaders have the responsibility to learn from their mistakes, not simply hide them.

However, some of what they're revealing is little more than common gossip: what so and so thought about so and so. This is just prattle and serves no real purpose but to gain media coverage. Taking a communication out of its context greatly distorts the meaning....

I strongly support revealing the former, and condemn all the nonsense revealed by the latter.

viewtopic.php?f=167&t=176138

Its not specific to wikileaks but covers all such whistle blowing sites & their actions etc

We left this one alone since its not exactly same topic, and not everyone frequent the debate section... a different crowd = a somewhat different discussion...
