Officers - Can be a source of great pride or great shame

Considering my 5+ years of playing Ive had very few officers, only about 10, but they were never just their for UP, in fact my officers always cost me far far more than I received with the bonuses and assistance I gave. I always considered myself very selective about the people I put my trust in, always tried to take on officers I thought I could help, and tried to guide them to play in an honorable way. Most of my former officers filled me with pride when they left the nest, I felt I had achieved something when I saw them flourish, saw them fight with honor and show great loyalty, but 2 of my former officers have recently shamed me, and I wonder if I will ever again take on another officer after such disappointment.

Discuss, no names, I dont want a flaming thread full of accusations, just general opinions, how many officers you've had, how many you considered a success, and how many ( if any ) you wish you had never invested your time and trust in.

I learnt from the begining that officers bring more liabilities than productivity. You get burnt once and you learn from it. best officer/co I ever had is myself.

when you say they shamed you how so?

Nice thread..you and I share this in common, the officers I have had in the past have either been hand picked by me because of their potential as players or they asked me to teach them..I have ground rules they have to abide by in terms of self sufficiency, class room time and even tests..there have been none I can say that have shamed me because if they did not pass incremental evaluations I released them. Some have gone on to become stars in this game in other alliances, and some still in DDE as very good players while others have quit playing. Again nice thread Mezz..and for encouragement shame and honor go hand in hand, take the good with the bad but do not let the bad stop your purpose.

Edit, I have had I dunno probably 50 or more..most have done well, only a handful I released.

I had one officer when I played before and that was easily one of the best sgw relationships I've had with anyone. There was trust, fun, bonuses etc. She was completely new to the game but she joined the training alliance of the empire I was in at the time and after a few talks I decided she could use the naq and took her in just for that, but after a while it became a proper CO-officer relationship. She kept playing even after I left and I must say became quite a good player. Best thing though is that she came into this game looking for the most honorable way to play and that never wavered. That being my only experience with officers, I'd say I got the good side of the deal :)

ive kept my number low....about 5 All Rejoin when i ascend or go on vac some leave their Primary co's when they see im active again.. its a friendship thing .1 thing ive learnt is if your good to your officers and look after them they will in the future repay you in the form of Honor or Disappointment.

im sorry for what ever they did to you man i really am thats why keeping officers below 5 at 1 time minimizes your loss of heart if 1 tries to screw you over.

I've had my officers for a while and still miss some that left. I'm sorry you got burned, i usually just have one condition for being an officer : talk to me on MSN and have lots of fun! 8-[
I help them with resources but more so i hand out advice and protect them whenever possible. Loyalty is a plus but if they leave we'll still be friends. :-)

P.S. : BMMJ13 i forced to be my officer. He liked it. <.<

it also Works the same Way with Commanders... All officers love a Strong Commander to help them also Officers share a Strong bond with their co's and when they don't do anything to help them they can get really disappointed and can be Proud officers when they Hear about their Commanders Feats in the game.....

I'm pretty easy when it comes to officers, all are welcome, but using me as a 'shield' is not a good idea, I never used my CO as one and won't tolerate it myself, I will however step in if I think its justified. Some of the officers I've had are people I found when looking for lifer targets, (when you raid as much as me, you need lots of those lol) I lifer them, then send a very informative message about why, some ignore it, some reply amusingly, and some take me up on the offer of additional advise. sometimes its like talking to a brick wall... sort of like having a few extra kids.

the 4 I have now have been with me for a while, and rejoin as soon as I ascend, I know I can rely on them to hold brokers and vice-versa. Other than that I let them get on with it, and they know where I am if they want me.

as for CO's, I've only had 3. the first was Spiritripper, who guided me through my first (drunken unfortunately, tho it made for good entertainment) ascention. then I joined DoC and mistress J, while I was a probie. Then I got under Myhill...he's taught me such a lot, and I have been with him ever since, financially I'd be better off as my own CO now, but I'd never dream of leaving the gorgeous big hunk of a man :smt060

I have had officers and like most of the above, I dont do it for personal gain as I lose more in income than I gain in UU.. However I feel the game is about helping, ask any of my officers past and present, if they are getting bother I will help (not sort), and I help them ingame with resources and experience, I train them to be the best they can be with whatever sort of gamestyle they wish to adopt.

Probably my best officer who is now a great in the game I would say is Rocky, he was a long time officer of mine and look at him now.

Without names or specifics,
could you give us some general info on the scenario(s) that you are referring to?

for example: taunting others, then using u a as shield; running from wars/battles they caused;
messing with your allies; cheating; extreme harassment; giving or selling your intel;
siding with your archenemies; etc?

If you're not willing to do so here, perhaps in a private message? :-)

I've always enjoyed having officers, and Ive always enjoyed officers that have a real interest in the game. They are usually the most enthusiastic players in the game, as they are usually new or weaker than yourself, so there hungry to get better. I think this is important as it keeps the 'Commander' hungry as that hunger rubs off on them, which fuels the game into a new chapter.

I've always been a keen player to have Officers and to introduce the officers into my alliances in the past, and again its something ive never regretted, as they trust you completely and it builds for a good relationship in an alliance.

Lu tze was a great example of that.

Well i agree to a certin point.
I have a few great officers, many is my friends and we speak often on msn and we help eachother out when needed.
They follow my few simple rules and i in return stand up for them.

but an officer is in still a player of his own and sometimes they have to make mistakes and stand up for themselves.. pehaps not always to the COs liking..

I haven't really had specific ties to non-alliance officers in a very long time. I used to recruit them back in my first couple years playing, though most would move on to better commanders as they got stronger. Sadly I don't think any of them still play...at least to my knowledge. I've had a bunch of my alliance members as officers off and on over the years, but that's more of an alliance bond than anything else.

It can be really nice to go find new people and push them to excel. It's a lot of what this game is about. Sure it's an investment that usually doesn'y pay off for you personally, but in the long run, it's how alliances grow, friendships start and the game survives.

Hmm, talking like that makes me want to go recruiting again...

I've probably had about 20 officers over the past 5 years, always did my best to help them learn how to grow, farm efficiently, ascend, give them some resources, teach them how to mass a little. The rest I felt was up to them, improve their own techniques and such.

Some were more loyal than others, one or two jumped ship to another CO without either the CO or the officer informing me. I just tend to help them get the basics down, then let them move on and do their own thing.
