TRYING TO LOG INTO MSN AND IT GIVES YOU A BOX SAYING YOU NEED TO UPGRADE?
IF YOU CLICK NO YOU CAN`T GET IN AND IF YOU CLICK YES IT GOES OFF AND TRIES TO DOWNLOAD WINDOWS LIVE 2011 WHICH ISN`T DESIGNED FOR XP AND DOESNT LIKE TO RUN ON OLDER COMPUTERS.
Well here is a workaround which I found at
http://www.imessengr.net/2009/11/how-to ... -live.html
As of November 9th, Microsoft has started upgrading all Windows Live Messenger users not running the latest release of Windows Live Messenger 2009.
Here is the solution for mandatory upgrades to Windows Live Messenger 2009 that will allow you to keep running Windows Live Messenger 8.5 on Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (32-bit edition only), Windows Vista (32-bit or 64-bit editions), Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit editions), or Windows Server 2008 :
1. Make sure that Windows Live Messenger 8.5 is turned off completely, kill the process if you have to. (Exit on quick launch bar icon works)
2. Right click the Windows Live Messenger 8.5 icon (can be found in Start Menu if you have no desktop icon) and select Properties.
3. Go to the Compatibility tab.
4. Check “Run this program in compatibility mode for” box and select Windows 2000 from the drop down menu
5. Done ! Now Windows Live Messenger 8.5 will sign in without any issues on Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (32-bit edition only), Windows Vista (32-bit or 64-bit editions), Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit editions), or Windows Server 2008.
Simples............
Note : Microsoft says that Windows Live Messenger 8.5 and earlier contain security vulnerabilities that can allow attackers to take over control of your computer. Continue using earlier versions of Windows Live Messenger at your own risk.
Update : Theres a patch knocking around somewhere (released last May) that fixes security issues and might be a good idea to use.
It can be found here :
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/08/2 ... -download/
It updates you to Windows Live Messenger Version 2009: 14.0.8089.726. (if you havn`t already got that version).
Setup Installer: Messenger.msi
Dependencies: 32-bit Microsoft Application Error Reporting (dw20shared.msi) or 64-bit Microsoft Application Error Reporting (dw20sharedamd64.msi), Microsoft Visual Studio Runtime (crt.msi), Windows Live Communications Platform (Contacts.msi), Segoe UI Font (SegoeFont.msi | not required on Windows Vista or Windows 7)
Optional secondary components: Windows Live Call (wlc.msi) and Installer Components
Looks like even with the above version you`ll need to use the workaround.
